Finding philosophy in Dr. Seuss

I recently saw Horton Hears a Who with my family. It was good clean fun (something hard to find in today’s society). It sparked some thinking. Are we a world sitting on a tiny spec on a flower? Is there a flower on Earth that holds a tiny world between its petals?

We think we’re so smart. How could anyone other than humans map the intricacies of the body? Who else could travel to the moon? What other species is as self-conscious and complicated in their thinking?

Perhaps its time that society is humbled. Think about what we do not know, what we cannot control. There is so much we do not understand. Take the brain, for instance, the most complex organ in the body. Is it not ironic that we claim to understand everything around us—and yet we do not understand ourselves? We place mentally handicapped individuals in institutions, thinking that a nurturing white-washed environment will keep them “safe”. What if they know something that we do not? What if WE are the ones being locked away by something bigger and smarter than ourselves? (This, of course, brings to mind another movie—Men in Black II—the locker scene at the end).

God is our controller. Even though you may not be a christian this brings up an excellent point about God. Just because we can't see him, doesn't mean he's not there!

I am a Christian, actually. I considered mentioning God, but I didn't bring religion into the mix because I thought it was provoking for people of all walks of life.

The same kind of thinking came to MY mind when I saw Men In Black II. If you've never seen it, there's a scene where they go to a train station and there's a whole community of tiny aliens in the train locker. Later, Will Smith refers to it, saying something like "Now that's just sad, keeping them cooped up in that tiny locker. Don't they know what the world is a bigger place?" (I don't remember the exact quote.)

And then Tommy Lee Jones says "Still a rookie, kid." and he kicks this "Do Not Open" door and there's these HUGE aliens walking around, as if WE were in a train station locker.

You know how when you look into the mirror, you see one reflection of yourself, but when you put another mirror at a certain angle near the mirror, you see a bunch of different reflections of yourself that never ends? I think the same analogy can be applied.

Good post. I like it. Oh please Oh please Oh please...

I have thought about Dr. Suess being reality at times too. Like how the grinch stole christmas is there really another world on a single snowflake? If so then there are tons and tons of other worlds that we obviously do not know about. Dr. Suess is educational even for adults.
