White isn't the new Black

In our world today segregation is trying to be completely purged from society. I think that it's a good thing because people shouldn't be hated for their sexual orientation, religious beliefs, race, ethnicity, etc. but for who they are as a person. Around the world you can hear pleas of peace and unity, but some how there's still a separation. Everywhere I look I see it. I see it in job applications, scholarship applications, and college applications, to list a few. If you've ever seen any of those applications you'll find at least one that asks about what race you are. Does this really matter? Why should one race of people be more eligible for something than another race of people? It shouldn't be based on race it should be based on character and morality. Yes there have been struggles among certain races throughout history, but that doesn't mean they should have any better a shot at something than anyone else. I find it a bit irritating because some employers will choose a black man over a white man just because they're afraid of looking racist for hiring a white man. It has nothing to do with the color of their skin; it should be based on who is more suitable for the job. If it happens to be the white man don't say that he only got the job because he's white. I'm tired of hearing things like that. It could've been the fact that he's more qualified. I'm not saying that, in some instances, their aren't people that only look at color, because there are people like that, but it doesn't mean that every time you don't get the job it's because you’re black, latino, asian, white, or middle eastern, you probably weren't suited for the position.

In my opinion I think that the "race" question on applications should be taken off because some people might look at an application and see the "white" box checked and continue on until they've found something else. If that question was taken off then you'd only be looking at the person as a whole not as a minority. Just because in the past things have been more favorable towards whites doesn't mean that they still are. I've seen diversity in thousands of places and I'm all for it, but I think someone shouldn't be looked at differently because of their race. If I was applying for a job and a black, Asian, Indian, etc. got the job instead of me, I wouldn't think, "oh it's just because they're black, asian, indian, etc." I'd think, "Guess they were more qualified." The world is full of diverse people and there isn't any room to play favorites. Don't be scared to pick the white, black, asian, indian, etc. because when you pick based on race where's the equal opportunity?

Since you are thinking about issues of race and privilege, I recommend the book White Privilege: Essential Readings on the Other Side of Racism, edited by Paula S. Rothenberg.

It will rock your world.
