How do you all feel about the infanticide thats taking place in China?

I'm sure you'all know what I'm talking about right? For years now hundreds even thousands of little baby girls have been murdered or given up these "Shelters" where there often locked into wooden chairs with a hole in the bottom and a bucket underneath and given little or no human contact other then feeding them until their either adopted or die. The vast majority die and quickly. Many are killed off by their parents, why is this? Because they wanted a boy, there is a limit to how many children they are allowed to have there, Patriarchy is very strong in China and parents wish to pass their wealth off to a son, so these terrible acts often take place, so the parents can try again to have a boy! Now I'm not saying that all Chinese couples are doing this, but it is a very common practice. How can this be? What is their logic behind such acts? Don't they see that a lack of females is going to catch up with them in the future?

We now have the technology to pick the sex of the child here in the U.S, why are the Chinese still doing this to baby girls why aren't they taking advantage of this technology?
What do you all think about this?

Well, first, I hadn't heard this. I would like to read more about it, though. If it is true, then that's horrible.

And second, I think it seems rather a waste of such technology, science, and the money that went into it to start using it to pick the gender of a baby. But, I guess to each his own, I just think we could put it to better use.

Finally, I don't think it would help the situation. From what you are describing, they are doing this out of an already high level of gender discrimination - they value boys better than girls. If they're then given this technology, what would happen? Every one would start having boys. Okay, sure, fewer infants and children would be murdered (again, if what you're saying is true) and China does have an over-population right now, but what happens when the next generation grows up in thirty years, and over 70% of them are male? Not to mention that to have the procedure done will, undoubtedly, cost a lot of money, so it will only lead to more discrimination. Now, not only the boys be favored, but they will be rich too because their parents were able to afford them?

Although I dont approve of it, the people of China know they are only allowed to have one child. Some try to have more in secret and thats not right. They shouldnt try because this is what happens. I'm not sure your story is exactly true though (about the chairs and things). Do you have a source?

They don't only have abortions for their second child. Women will have abortions with their first child if they know it is a girl, or has a disorder because they only want healthy baby boys.

Yes there are thousands of sources for this topic, I can't believe that you've never heard about this. This was one of the big topics in my women's studies classes for the last 3 yrs of college. Just type it into a search engine, you'll hear plaenty about it. I've even found pictures of it, theres even a condition thats caused by leaving babies in these chairs, basically the babies just rock back and forth, they get to where they don't even cry anymore. Its so sad.

Here I just did a quick search, and this is what I found. This has been going on in China since before 1949! Estimates are around 15million female babies have "dissapeared" died, murdered, neglected to death!

THank you for doing the search.

I wasn't trying to imply that you weren't being truthful, I had just never heard this.

My ethics and diversity class was just talking about abortion in other countries, and all anyone said was that when families have more than one child, the second becomes a ward of the state and is usually taught a trade (like many end up in Olympic Training, according to her), but that they still live with their parents.

I'm obviously going to have to go back to my notes and see if she mentioned any references, and I'll ask her.
