Women and Men: Will they ever be EQUAL?

Kristin's picture

In the year 2008, women and men are considered to be equal. However, my English teacher recently brought up something that made me disagree. He started to talk about girls wearing shirts that show cleavage. My teacher said that wearing risque clothing was inappropriate and setting back the women's right movement. Not only that, but he also believes my school should have a dress code for girls during swimming and that we should not be allowed to wear bikinis during swimming class. Meanwhile, the boys in my school are allowed to wear anything they like during swimming class, even speedos.
Now, is that fair? Is that "equal"? Is it fair that a boy can take off his shirt in public without anyone caring, but when I wear a shirt that shows cleavage I'm considered a slut? How is that equal?
Showing off our bodies is not setting back the women's rights movement. In fact, I believe it is furthering it. Women have boobs; its a scientific fact. Why should we hide them just because a bunch of men say so? We should be able to take off our clothes without being called sluts or whores.
I believe women and men will only truly be equal when women can wear what they want, just like men.

"In the year 2008, women and men are considered to be equal." Sorry... that's just not true. In my opinion, women and men will never be equal, no matter how much some people may want it to be that way.

First of all, what part of the world are you talking about? America? Men and women aren't equal in America these days, and they certainly aren't equal in many other places in the world.

Men often still get paid more than women. There are still some jobs men can do that most women can't. The genders are different... therefore, we shall forever be treated differently. It's just the way it is.

It's a biological fact that as a general rule, men are usually bigger and stronger than women. Is this something women should be ashamed of? Heck no! Does it mean that we might not be the best choices for jobs such as firefighting? Sure, but that's okay. Perhaps most women will never know what it's like to bench-press a mini cooper, but women can know the miracle of childbirth which men can never fully understand to the same extent.

Men and women are different. We'll always be, and we'll always be treated differently because of it. We just have to be sure both genders get the equal respect they deserve.

I whole-heartedly agree! Men and women are NOT equal. Nor should they be. Our bodies and minds work differently and because of that we will never be equal. However, that doesn't mean we don't deserve equal opportunity. Yeah, women are not the best choice for jobs like firefighting, but if they want to try to do it, then they should be allowed.

To respond to the original post though, I don't think the issue of clothing falls into that "equal opportunity" clause. Women have boobs. Yay for us! But I for one have no desire to go around topless all the time. My body is biologically different from a man's, so there are some socially acceptable limitations. Cleavage is great, and can actually be used to your advantage (ever get a free beer at the bar while wearing a v-neck?) something that men cannot do. And bikinis are ok by me, as long as the person wearing the bikini feels comfortable doing so, then it should be allowed.

However, I'm a little concerned at the fact that your male teacher brought this up. Do you mind me asking what grade you're in? A male teacher should not be discussing dress code with his female students. Its simply not appropriate. If he has a problem with your school's dress code, then he should bring it up at a faculty meeting or with the administration.

Okay. It is inappropriate to show mondo cleavage. Just like it is for guys to wear their pants so low you can see their ass. Women's right movement wasn't about what clothes to wear...

Showing off our bodies is not setting back the women's rights movement. In fact, I believe it is furthering it.
I do believe that you are using the "women's rights movement" as a crutch for your opinion, but I don't believe that it really clarifies what you're saying.

Why should we hide them just because a bunch of men say so? We should be able to take off our clothes without being called sluts or whores.
First, I definetly believe men would love women walking around with no clothes on (or most anyway). The whole "we should be able to take our clothes off without being called sluts or whores" makes me grin. Where and why would you take off your clothes?

You completely missed my point.
My point was that I believe that men and women should be allowed to dress equally.
I wasn't getting in to wages or anything like that. I just think that its unfair that women can't dress the way they want without being called a slut.

Respond to mine ^_^
I need to know your answer.

We'll never be able to dress equally because our bodies aren't the same... that's just the way it is.

It's because women don't like the fact that men get hard-ons from other women showing off Nature's Bottles.
