Global Warming special

I just watched a special on the Discovery Channel about Global Warming. It made me really sad to think about all the destruction we are causing to our planet. And how awful and ugly the world could be for our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. There are SO many beautiful things in nature, but they could be destroyed or underwater in less than 100 years. That is crazy to think about.

It also made me sad because polar bears could become extinct (along with half of the species on the planet) if we don't do something about it. Polar bears are really cute. They're my favorite animal.

It was very comforting to know that if every family changed just one regular lightbulb to an energy efficient compact flurescent bulb it would equate to taking either 1/2 million to a million cars off the road. That is AMAZING! And think what we could do if we unplugged some stuff when we're not using it (toasters, TVs, hair dryers, lamps, etc), turned lights off when not in use, air dried our clothes, and/or drove hybrid (or at least more energy efficient) cars.

I want to share my passion for preserving our planet. It is very discouraging when I'm driving down the road and I am constantly seeing Hummers and other huge SUV's. What is the purpose of SUV's? I hate the new Hummer commericial with the guy trying to "regain his manhood". Why can't he regain his manhood by protecting our planet and keeping it beautiful for the next generations? Why can't that be rewarded? Why is it such a status symbol to drive a big, ugly, gas guzzling thing? I want to do a survey of people who drive those big, ugly boxes. I want to know what their reasons are for buying and driving them. I think it would be interesting.

I am afraid to share my passion. I am afraid that people are going to label me a tree hugger with all the negative connotations. Maybe I am somewhat of a tree hugger. Maybe I do care about the environment. But I care about it for spiritual and historical and other reasons. The Earth has been around for such a long time and we are destroying in in mere decades. There is so much history there. The ice in the Artic is melting, but scientists can learn many things about the Earth just by looking at samples of ice. We're losing beautiful landscapes. As Christians, we are ruining one of the most beautiful things that God has made and given to us to enjoy. How can we claim to be Christians and not take care of our blessings? I just don't get it. I know I'm not perfect. I mess up things. I don't appreciate things. I just want people to see what I see.
