Working "Girl"

One question I have been asked recently is about gender discrimination. I personally feel that gender discrimination, although it still exists, is not nearly as prevalent as everyone seems to want to believe. The people that find it the most often are the people who go around looking for it.

And I'm sure you've met those people, every thing is to blame on their gender, or their race, or their religion; but never, ever, could they possibly be just plain underqualified for the job.

Throughout my adult life, I have been a working, professional woman (obviously). I can honestly say that I have never come across any sort of gender bias or discrimination - none that I've seen, anyway. I've always been paid equal or more as men in my same position, have never been sexually harrassed, have never been demeaned for being a female, nothing. But I have come across many ladies who seem to find it where ever they go. How is that possible? Of course, I know it exists; but how can I, who's lived in many different states and has worked in professions dominated by men, not ever see it when there are so many others who seem to find it every day no matter what job they are looking for? Have I just been blind? That's possible. Or maybe I just got extremely lucky that I've never been faced with it. But that's a pretty large discrepency.

Then there are people who see it when it isn't even there, such as those I described above. So, here's my question. What do you think of a professional, working woman being called "girl" in the workplace by a colleague?

Is that demeaning or belittling in any way? I don't think so; but then there are guys (usually older) who might actually mean it in a somewhat belittling manner. But do they mean it as a demeaning manner regarding gender or age? Is it really offensive to be referred to as a girl if you're working? Would you consider it an insult? If you've ever said it, did you mean it as an insult?

Though I'm not a working woman yet, I too sometimes feel that there isn't discrimination against the female gender at the workplace (or anywhere else for that manner). But I know based on the facts that women have not achieved equality with men in many fields.

As far as your situation with being called girl... I think that lady was being extreme but it probably had something to do with the fact that you do have a name.

Anyhow, if wish for enlightment (or enough of it so you can make an informed decision on feminism later on) I suggest you read "Closing The Leadership Gap: Why women can and must help run the world." I know the title sounds very raging feminist, but she presents an interesting arguement about how the US is equivalent to many third-world countries when it comes to gender equality.

Hey if someone called me a girl I would not mind. Maybe it depends on the tone.
I think lately people have been suing discrimination way to much. It's like the boy who cried wolf.

They are actually acting more like girly-girls than they think. "Omg all the attention on ME please!". See what I mean?

LOL! Yes, that's exactly what they're doing. And then most of them can't fathom why they aren't taken seriously about it.

Yeah I think it is exaggerated too.

Exactly, aren't there a lot more problems in the world? But someone called me "girl" at the office, and a young lady (maybe about 20 or 21) came in after he left and asked why I didn't deck him?

What?!

That's when she started spouting off about how wrong he was to call me a girl. I looked at my mirror and said, "I am a girl". And she didn't get it.

After she left, I wondered why she felt it was discrimination and I didn't. So, she's just got too much time on her hands?

Oh please. Feminists just need something to argue and put all the attention on them.

I know, I don't get it! I've actually been called anti-feminist for telling someone to stop looking for an argument about things like this.

So many people need to just start growing up...
