Teen Obesity

This is a growing problem in America, the Hamburger capital of the world. A lot of teens are turning to unhealthy eating habits, thus we have a lot of obese teenagers, and maybe even kids.

The schools are even helping the country to decrease obesity by providing for non-greasy food: instead of fried fries, we get baked ones; instead of regular chips, we get baked ones...but I dont really think it is helping because at the end of the day, kids will eat what they want, and those typically consist of fatty foods.

Kids have to exercise, show some discipline by cutting down their unhealthy diet and eating healthy, and stop sitting at home playing video games, webbing, and watching TV. When it all comes down to it, teenagers need to show some dicsipline and responsibilty. For example, instead of drinking soda drink juice or water. And after a while of not drinking soda, you're body will start to not like it, and its the same with everthing else. If you train your body not to eat hamburgers, eventually you're body isnt going to crave hamburgers as much as it used to,

Sure genetics will play a part in obesity, but this should only be a factor. It will slow you down by making dieting harder, but if you have discipline and you set a goal, it shouldnt stop you.

Most of the time it is not hte kids fault it is the parents. What eight year old kid would say no if their parents offer them a candy bar. Not many I know. The blame lies with the parents and their thoughts that it is much easier to take a kid to McDonalds than to make a homemade healthy meal.

I think that this can be a touchy subject. We have to get kids to eat healthy. That means, eat enough of the right stuff. That means that we need to have kids eating the healthy foods, and enough that they get their daily requirements. This will knock out obesity and eating disorders. Afterall, a healthy weight is different for everyone. We cant all expect to run around looking like models.

This blog is a very astute analysis of a very serious problem facing our country. While I feel that kids bear a great deal of responsibility for their diet choices, I also feel that parents and schools are responsible for teaching their kids about eating healthy. Equally as disturbing is the lack of responsibility by the Food Industry in selling increasingly unhealthy foods. I do not accept the Kevin Trudeau - Morgan Spurlock Conspiracy Theory that they are intentionally making kids fat and addicted to unhealthy foods. I think they care more about making a buck than they do about your health or my health or anyone's health. Good blog. Check out mine.

If kids are raised on unhealthy food they will continue to eat it. Almost all of the blame rests on the parents.

I do believe SOME of the blame rest on the parents, but not ALL...

I agree spme parents raise their children with unhealthy eating habits, but it doesnt mean they have to continue with it for the rest of their lives. I mean you cant really excpect a parent to say "No" to a kid who wants to eat candy or ice cream or junk food...?

I mean I used to be fat, I'd like to blame my parents for not making me stop eating all those unhealthy food but I cant...and I dont have that unhealthy way of eating anymore, and I exercise, and I watch what I eat.

A parents job is to say no to a kid in that situation.

That was partially your parents' fault. As a child, you lack the proper reasoning skills and understanding of consequences to make decisions that are in your best interest. This is why parents are legally able to make decisions for children. Any parent who doesn't say no to a child who wants to eat candy, ice cream, or junk food is about as good as a parent who won't say no to the child who wants to play in the middle of a highway.

This is a really good subject to blog about. However it isn't always the kids fault, sometimes it's the parents. And it also depends on how you want to veiw it. With me for example. I do have a balance of healthy foods but I do still eat junk food. I work out and don't have a whole lot of fat but I'm 185 pounds(even though I don't look like it). Muscle weighs more than fat. Does it mean I'm obesce, maybe, but it really all depends on how you look at it.

"And so it was my escape. My given right to cut as deep as I could. My friend, the blade."

weighing more because of muscle doesnt mean your fat...I mean I'm like that, too...I always say
I'm fat (prolbably cus im girl. lol), but I know deep down I'm healthy...Im like 140 lbs and I'm only 5'3...but that's because I work out and play sports, which adds to bone mass.

Funny how half of America is obese and the other half anorexic.

Sarah702's picture

The other half cant help but be anorexic, when everytime they turn on the TV or flip a mgazine page they see skinny ass models and underweight actresss.

They're just following what's "in". lol

We have a sick country.

Ban trans fat from restuarants like new york did. it might help other states a bit.

That sounds like a good idea to me. i had no idea New York had done that.

I think it is partially the parents' fault as well. Young children naturally look to their parents/guardians to know how to act in any situation. If bad eating habits are taught and fueled, that's how the child will grow up and those habits are going to be really hard to break.

technically it's also hard because healthy food is a lot more expensive. for a college student paying tuition i have to say that it's easier to spend $2 on a cheesburger and fries then it is to spend $ on a sandwhich. although i don't really blame anyone, it is what it is, and if i wanted to change i could. if anyone wanted to change extremely bad they could.

That's true. I was walking through the aisles at work, the local grocery store, and noticed that all the healthy food was more expensive. You can get candy and sugary cereal cheap in bulk. On the contrary, vegetables are quickly rising in price, salad has never been cheap and fruit, well...fruit doesn't really budge aside from the occasional sale.

You can also get healthy cereal in bulk. Corn flakes are usually the least expensive cereal available. An entire bag of salad is 99 cents where I live- cheaper than the value hamburger and enough for several salads. Brown beans, frozen vegetables, and bread are all super cheap and super healthy. This is about the worst excuse anyone can use for not eating healthy. I used to live on $10 per month in groceries, and I ate incredibly healthy.

It is cheaper to go to the store and buy a loaf of bread and so on and make yourself a sandwitch every day.

i don't mean to be rude i just really like spelling......sandwhich...sorry

Ya I am really bad at spelling and that combined with how late it is cause typos sorry.

my mom made me and my sister watch this DVD, and it teaches a person how to use their money wisely. instead of spending $2 every meal for a week, so that means about $45 a week. why dont you use it to go to the grocery, and buy fresh produce, meat, and bread so you could make your own. it will prabably last you longer than a week, and you wont have to spend as much.

Yes you would save a lot like that.

sadly enough i know this is true. i work in a health food store....and well the most complaints i get are on the prices. you can spend 200 easy on a couple weeks worth of food for the family......sad really.

Everytime I visit our health food store to pick up my "natural sleep aids," I get the bare basics, but anything more than that, I just can't afford. I'm a student, I work a minimum wage job. It's not as if I have an abundance of money to spend, I've been known to utter "That's why the rich people are skinny!" Because it's true...

You don't have to shop at a health food store to eat healthy. Go check out the local WalMart or Target. A bag of frozen veggies is about $1.00. Beans are still cheap, healthy, and versatile. There are many healthy foods for cheap, but money sounds like a great excuse for some reason.
