Shold it be against the law to talk on a cell phone while driving?

North Carolina just passed a law that makes it illegal for kids under the age of 18 years old to use a cell phone while driving a car.  I do not agree with this law.  I can drive perfectly well while talking on my cell phone and there are a lot of times where I need to call someone while I am driving.  There is no reason to be talking on the phone in the car.  It is no more dangerous than driving while drinking a bottle of water and I doubt that will be outlawed.  I hope this does not become a trend and pass through the states.
Cell phones do not distract you very much from driving, there is no reason to out law them.

First of all, you need to correct your spelling errors. Could be typos, but it's hard to read either way. To get more people to respond to your posts you should correct the spelling mistakes.

Secondly, I do not think a law like this should be passed cause then we'll have some goof ball deciding eventually to pass a law that says drivers are not allowed to talk to anyone including the people they are in the car with. I can understand maybe requiring a headset cause having both hands, especially for new and inexperienced drivers, may be necessary, but still this seems a little ridiculous.

The number one cause of accidents is people that were distracted while driving. This includes: eating, putting on makeup, changing CD's or radio stations. lighting cigarettes, talking on cell phones, reading books and newspapers, reprimanding children, etc...

You are operating a vehicle that weighs between 2,000(compact) and 10,000(H1 Hummer) lbs traveling at 5-70 mph and a momentary loss of control can lead to people dying. Ask an engineering student to figure out the average force exerted on impact of a 4000lb vehicle traveling at 35mph. Wait, I'm in Computer Science hold on...... it's approximately 205,333 lbf/sec. That is a huge amount of force. This is why European cars such as BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini have resisted putting cup holders in their cars.

It is unfortunate that we have to create laws to protect people from themselves. These laws will save some lives but no law is foolproof because there always seems to be better fools.

Personally i dont use my cellphone while driving bc i dont think its necessary. however, i do believe that instead of restricting cellphone use to prevent accidents, people should focus on drinking and driving and come up with better tactics to help resolve car accidents.
