Sierra Leone is an extremely poor nation with the lowest average income in the world. Although it has substantial mineral resources, the nation's economic development has always been hampered by an over-dependence on mineral exploitation, like the mining of diamonds. The Shine On Sierra Leone Foundation provides education, clothing and food for children living in the severely impoverished diamond mining villages.
The Foundation has a Myspace page that not very many people seem to have come across yet, so I want to help spread the word. If you'd like to donate to help provide these essentials to the children of Sierra Leone, you can head here:

There are so many non profits out there doing brilliant work. Some times it's truly difficult to decide where to "spare some change." I guess when we have to worry about rent and bills and can't decide where to donate, we end up not doing it after all.
This is very true. But I suppose even 5 cents donated to the cause can help. If a GREAT deal of people donate 5 cents, then hopefully some sort of goal can be reached.
And even though I know not everyone can spare time or money to a cause such as this, I hope everyone can try to spread the word to those who can.
you don't have to donate your paycheck. Instead of going to a fast food restaurant or buying a soda, just donate that. Besides, you'd think that more people WOULD donate because of the tax-deductible incentive.
Doctors Without Borders is a really great organisation that I donate to, and I trust them. Organisations like Planned Parenthood and NOW need money more than ever now, especially considering the recent abortion ban attempts and the current Supreme Court hearings. I've donated to UNICEF and while I can understand people's hesitation with anything related to the UN, it is widely known and supported by celebrities and I believe it to be trustworthy.
We live in a society of excess, we have more than enough spare dimes and nickels to spare. I know not everyone has the luxury of living in excess, especailly college students, but if you really care and you really want to help then you will find a way. Fast for a day, one day and donate the money you would ahve spent on food which so many people live without each day, don't buy that expensive pair of jeans or shoes and instead donate that money, choose to live a life of just essentials and use the rest to help others.
- Challenge yourself everyday, if you don't then it is a wasted day.

yeah, i totally agree, but the apathy represented by people my age is ridiculous. I set up an account to accept donations and blogged about it, and at least 100 people have viewed that blog, and two people ended up donating. Most people I know do not donate their money. If one dollar was donated from each of those people who had viewed my myspace blog, i could've accumulated more money. But no one bothered. It really hurt me, because most of those people who viewed the page were my friends.
But anyway, I agree that people should live more sustainably. I try to do it myself, from things like conserving water and volunteering and donating money to organisations I love.... It is hard to get people to do that, mostly because to them, it appears to be a lifestyle change. And I guess it is, but, it's a far more rewarding one.
Thank you for posting this blog.I am Sierra Leonean and I know first hand how poor a country it is and how just the smallest amount makes a big difference. It is always so uplifting to see other people discuss Sierra Leone's problems because I feel that with the help of other nations and countries Sierra Leone can be one of the flourishing nations of the new generations.lol . I feel like I'm answering a question at a beauty pageant.
