President Bush and the U.S.-Mexico Border Fence

President Bush signed a bill earlier today to build a 700 mile fence on our southern border with Mexico.  The newly elected Mexican president, Felipe Calderon, expressed disapproval for the signing of the bill.

"I believe that today the United States is committing a grave error in building the wall on our border."

It seems apparent that we have a problem with illegal foreigners coming into the United States.  Do you think that the building of a fence on our border with Mexico will help solve the problem?

I was actually in Mexico at the time of the presidential elections.  Sometimes it seemed that Mexico didn't like us Americans very much.  Will this fence only cause the tension between us to be greater?

This move by Bush may be an attempt to help the Republican candidates in the House who are up for re-election.  Personally, I think the fence could be both a good thing and a bad thing.  At least we're showing that we're serious about controlling our illegal immigration problem.

I do not see a bad thing about the fence. The Mexican army is not even close in size to the American army so it would be foolish for them to start a war. If they would keep their own citizens within their border then we wouldn't have to establish some form of barrier on the border.

I REALLY DON'T THINK IT'S ABOUT WAR I FEEL IT'S MORE ABOUT THE INEFFECTIVENESS OF THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT THAT IS THE ISSUE HERE. MOST IMMIGRANTS LEAVE BECAUSE THEY ARE UNABLE TO FIND WORK. THAT IS PARTLY THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT FAULT.

True dat. It's not the United States' fault that Mexico is a crappy place to live.

And it is not my fault that they live in a crappy place. Lifes a bitch. They need to get over it. Their ancestors lived for hundreds of years in Mexico and made it perfectly fine.

There was a yahoo news story a few weeks ago which quoted the Mexican president as calling the then-only-proposed wall comparable to the Berlin wall, of Germany. That made me very angry. I think it's wonderful that SOMETHING is being done to try and regulate the border. This is by no means a real solution, but it's an active first step, and maybe it will help while we get some real policy in place as a foundation for future action.

I AGREE WITH YOU, HOWEVER I FEEL THE ONLY TRUE SOLUTION MUST COME FROM AN INTERNAL CHANGE IN GOVERNMENT. THE UN SHOULD AIDE IN THE FIGHT FOR A NEW, LESS CORRUPT GOVERNMENT.

I believe it's a horrid idea, they're already upset with us enough and this just puts more of a stress on the tension caused between mexicans crossing our boarder, we need a better solution than a fence. I do believe, if we aren't careful that this may soon become the Berlin wall all over again.

What do you suggest? Mexicans are abusing their privilege to come to our country. Instead of figuring out a way to wake up their government so that they can get some help, they're invading our land (illegally). It's sad when it's so bad that you have to put up a fence, but I see it as a clear message that we're not taking their crap anymore.

"They're already upset with us enough"

So we need to base our policy off what the illegals want?

"This just puts more of a stress on the tension"

Well, no duh, they want to break our laws, we have made a small step towards stopping that. The fence is by no means a solution, but it is a start, a step in the right direction, a kind of placeholder until real policy can be enacted and enforced.

"This may soon beecome the Berlin wall all over again."

Where did you get your history information?? Do you know what the Berlin wall was? Please see this link for more information: http://www.progressiveu.org/190000-mexico-usa-border-berlin-wall
