Parents in NYC are upset over a ban on cell phones. I think it's ridiculous to ban cell phones in schools. While cell phones seem simply to be tools of convenience they are also used for safety. If a child walks home from school they could use the cell phone in case of an emergency. Or in New York City, where this story takes place, kids are taking the subway or the city bus home. THings happen, these students should have a way to speak with their parents or to place a call to 911. Not to mention the fact that students should not be held prisoner. They are kids going to school. They aren't criminals on their way to jail. If cell phones are going off in class, take the cell phones away then. Don't punish the responsible students as you would the irresponsible ones. High School is supposed to be leading kids in the direction of college. Students are lost when they go off to college because they have been treated like children for the last four years in high school.
