It's Saturday Mornin'; Do You Know Where Your Children Are?

'Cause I sure as heck don't.

Saturday mornings, where did they go? And further more, who replaced it with this crap? What am I speaking about you might ask? Simple answer. Cartoons. Yes, I am writing a blog about cartoons.

It used to be that children would wake up on a Saturday morning, rush downstares, maybe grab something to eat, plop down in front of the boob tube and melt into the couch while they engrossed themselves in the world of Tom and Jerry, Yosemite Sam, Bugs, and Elmor Fud. Maybe you'd flip channels over to the WB and catch Looney Tunes.

Fortunally for me, I've grown up on Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, and the gang, the Looney Tunes, and Johnny Bravo. To me, these are real cartoons, utterly pointless, but just as good. Then came cable and Dish and soon cartoons were transferred over to cable, leaving those of us who still watched channels 17 and 21 to bask in the glory of things like Doug and PepperAnne (she's to school for 7th grade you know!). That was all fine and dandy by me, but I wanted my damn cartoons back. Each year we'd go visit my grandparents (6 hours away) and they had channel 66 on cable which ran cartoon network, Score! I've got my cartoons back, I'd wake up early, and we'd let the tv run nearly all day as we watched the older cartoons.

Well what the hell happened?! I turn on cartoon network and it's got all these weird shows filled with robots and japanese influenced short shows. Bring back Dexter and Johnny, NOW! Or hey, I have the Disney channel, I let that run and you've got your normal shows, then you have things like Kim Possible and Stitch, well, who cares? They're cute and all, but they aren't real cartoons. Then you flip over to channel 42 and you've got Yuguio and a demented verision of the Power Rangers. It's become boring and so life like based (I'm talking how they are created, not the story of the show) and everyone has 5 fingers on each hand and nothing is drawn for kids.

Personally, when I grow up and have children, I'm buying classics, like Felix the Cat and The Smurfs and my children will grow up on something wholesome and good instead of watching things like Kim Possible which show nothing but how to out due one another or other cartoons like "The Buzz on Maggie" which pride themselves in not telling a story, but rather being greedy.

Maybe it's just me, maybe it's the fact that I'm 16 and I spend a few hours of my time watching now a days cartoons and I'm just not feeling it, but heck, when I was 6 I was bored of the crap they came out with. Again, give me my damn Power Rangers, and the green one better be included!

I love Kim Possible damnit! Cartoon Network is kinda sketchy until adult swim. We just have to wait for this anime craze to wash away and then we can have our cartoons back. Dexter was awsome, likewise powerpuff girls.

Oh, and so screw the Power Rangers, and the rip off VR Rangers too. God they were lame. Their mouths didn't even move. The green ranger was lame until he turned into the white one anyway. Of course you like him though, he was the sex appeal for the six year old ladies. Did you notice how the black ranger totally disappeared? Damn that pissed me off, plus he had the mastadon, the coolest zord ever!

Man it is sad how easily I remember all that.

Res ipsa loquitur.

Wow. The most I remember from the Power Rangers is they conviently got themselves into situations and then got all upset and uppity when they had to figure them out. Oh and they transformed, since you know, it's the cool thing to do. But boy did I love that show. Haha.

Kim Possible is alright, she's a cool chick, I wouldn't mind having a naked mole rat..well that was until I saw one up close and hear they can chew through cement. You know, I have never seen the powerpuff girls, how sad is that?

And really, I think each and every person in America who is obsessed with Anime needs to just move to Japan. I'm a strong believer in keeping your own cultures to your own countries. It's okay to have some influence, but when you have American kids dressing up like Anime..things, then it's time to go to your own country. =P

Power Rangers was good, until they went and changed what everybody transformed into, then it was just stupid. And now it's even stupider. Their costumes have capes, which everybody knows you don't need unless you're gonna fly and Power Rangers don't fly (except for the pink ranger when she transformed into a pterodactyl), and the yellow ranger's a guy, when everyone knows the red, blue and green rangers are supposed to be the guys and the yellow and pink rangers are supposed to be girls! lol, as much I used to like Power Ranger, I have to admit it was a pretty stupid show to begin with.

Personally I like both sets of cartoons, although I agree that the older ones just seemed better (although that could've been because I was a kid and everything seemed better then).

What I miss most though are the superhero cartoons. When I was a kid, every Saturday morning my dad and I would watch things like the Fantastic Four and Iron Man, or we'd change the channel and watch DC stuff like Superman and Batman. Where did they go? There are some new sets out now, but they tend to be poor quality (like that new Spiderman...), and the only way I can watch the old ones is to stay up half the night to catch Boomarang, and then it's only DC (and Marvel was just so much cooler). I know I must sound like a geek, but those cartoons were awesome, and I wanted to continue the tradition when I was a dad...but it's not going to happen because they're gone.

P.S.: I can't stand Nickelodeon's new cartoons, though.

I loved PepperAnne and her screechy voice, lol. And the Animaniac's were fun too. Oh and Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog. And Young Hercules. I miss them. I like anime too. Some of it's really good. Sometimes i'm astounded by how real everything looks or how well everything plays out. Watch Samurai Shamploo. Some of them, a la Pokemon and Digimon are, for lack of a better word, senseless or pointless, (but I loved those shows too!). Not all anime is bad, though. For kids I would say the adult swin stuff is out of the question. They shouldn't watch it. But, in general, it's not all bad.

I agree. I like the old cartoons so much better than the ones out today. My childhood would not have been complete without Doug, The Smurfs, Bobby's World, Captain Planet and Eureeka's Castle (not a cartoon but still one of my all-time favorite children's shows). As corny as it was, Power Rangers was much better in its original form. I think today's cartoons have become too adult. There are sexual undertones in some of them; and a lot of the time I hear jokes that I know a 6-year old could not possibly understand. So I wonder, are these toons really for the kids?

What about the cartoons on PBS because don't you think those cartoons are good and wholesome? Also, don't forget about those cartoons that are on NBC on Saturday mornings.

I enjoy many of the Japanese influenced shows, and I'm sure they have a considerable fan base. But I agree with you. The old cartoons need to come back. I grew up watching Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon, and I've got to say that those were some quality shows (even if they were ridiculous in plot and feasibility). Bugs Bunny was never my favorite, but I'd rather have him than Lazlo any day. Heck, I'd rather have the old school Pokemon versus the one that's on now!

The greatest loss to me was the Superhero shows. Justice League, Batman, Spiderman, Power Rangers. I even consider Sailor Moon a superhero show, even though it's technically anime. Even the new-ish Teen Titans (probably my favorite show ever). But all of them are either gone or twisted into something that just... isn't the same. What happened to them? I'm sure the children of today would still enjoy them.
