"If you're not on Myspace you don't exist"

Why do people have a myspace? Is it the new cool thing? Do people like everyone knowing everything about them? What and who are they looking for on this website?

Myspace has over 78 million registered accounts. Some people think this could be dangerous. Others think that it is a new way for teens to express themselves.

Well, lets start out with how myspace could be dangerous. The primary concern about myspace is its openess that could put youth at risk, making them vulnerable to any predators and invading their safety. More specifically, its main concern is the information and photos that teens reveal on there profiles. They reveal things such as sexual and abusive behavior, underage drinking,  and discussions of drug use. Some things thats are said and illustrated on teens profiles are things that should be kept secret and not allowed into the public. More than that, do these teens even know who is looking at there accounts? The goverment and jobs use Myspace all the time to look up information about people and see what there really about. Myspace is so overpopulated that people could find out who your friends are, where you hang out, what you do, where you live, etc. Their are so many things revealed on myspace its almost unbelievable.

Yet what about the good side in Myspace. Myspace allows teens to express there culture. They can talk about things such as fashion, reality, and the media.  It allows teens to reveal there identity and and there social development, giving them a way to express themselves. This gives teens a way to interact with there friends, catch up with people they havent seen since the 2nd grade, and gives teens a way to find out how they fit into this world.

So this is what it comes down to, Is myspace really that dangerous? Or is it a good way to just interact? Or are individuals just becoming too addicted to it?

People stay on myspace day and night, waiting for a comment. Competing to make more friends, organizing there " top 8". Finding out personal information about others. Or simply trying to put more codes on it to fix it up and make there profile look nice. All for what????

Well, giving my own opinion, I don't think myspace is THAT bad. However, I do think it is extremely overrated and if you are going to have one, let's just say, dont put anything on there that you wouldn't want your parents to see or know. Because you never know who is looking at it, or possibly hacking into it. Although, Its a good way to express yourself, and get in touch with old friends. Just keep your information broad, if you must have one.

I wouldn't go as far to say you don't exist, but to many it used to seem odd if you didn't have a MySpace account. It's a figment of social stature, that by having a profile for everyone to see was something important to have. Now at least where I live it's just as cool NOT to have a MySpace because so many of them look flowery and ridiculous.

And yes, I have a MySpace.

Yeah... and what about facebook? That's become just as bad, if not worse than facebook, especially on the college campus before they opened it up to everyone.

Facebook and Myspace are easy to use to find out personal information, I know for my Job Seeking Skills class they say if you're really looking for a job delete your Myspace and Facebook and go to Monster or one of those websites and sell yourself there.

For now though I have both and I keep my Myspace up to date with html that I learned a long time ago to keep things private and the only reason I do this is so my Mom can't read my comments and invade me with questions when I'm not online. Lately this site and college work has been consuming me more than Myspace. Hmmm, wonder if you can start a Myspace Anonymous Addictions class and make it work?

Sorry it's so long.

There are many times of people in this world. There are naive people, bad people, good people, shy people, weird people. Everyone wants to be acknowledged. You can use myspace for that. I know there are perverts and young girls who expose themselves, but even if there wasn't a myspace, they would do so anyway. It's just what defines their character. But I believe myspace is a fad and something else will come along to sweep the nation off their feet. But also believe that myspace allows too much information to be displayed. Your location should be confidential but just because there's the option to input it, I think people think they have to type something. For some people, myspace is a way to learn how to work on a computer. I learned how to make my own backgrounds and display a music file. Things I had no idea how to do. But my point is, is that people will be themselves whether they have myspace or not. They just have a much larger outreach to the world to prance who they are.

...that you can make your Myspace private? I deleted mine, though, cause I was addicted to it.

Myspace isnt that bad. i have one. Mine has been hacked in to and i've had to delete it. but that's my fault. i put to much information on it. its only as bad as what you make it. its your choice of what goes on it. Myspace is a way of expressing yourself. I talk with and find people that i havent seen in years. if people are afriad of stalkers and sexual predators- then dont have a myspace.

My cousin got me on there, so that I could be able to talk to him and my little step brother easier. I ended up finding just about every (good) buddy that I had, my ex's and a lot more family members, that even he didn't know were on there.

But, that's all it's for really, the site is crappy, unless you're trying to promote your music.

I'm not really a fan of MySpace. I guess I'm not really into the whole making friends with random people online. I am in high school, but I don't really see the need to use one of these types of sites. What ever happened to just talking to people? And for personal issues, I prefer to write in a journal. A real live paper journal. With a pen. Or sometimes even markers or crayons, depending on my mood. *GASP* I know, but its actually very therapeutic and much more personal. I guess ultimatly, its a personal decision, but I dfo think that people really need to be more careful about what they put on their sites.

P.S. its "their" not "there"-sorry but this bothered me immensely.

actually it's there, as in place. their is in people, as in them :-)

But anyways, I can dig what you're saying, but, all of those people that I speak to are in California and I am in Oklahoma, there's no use of me running up a bill or even sending letters, when I can type well and so can they, and since we are on the net.....we mise well put it to some use of communication.
