How Did Our Idea of Beauty Become So Distorted?

The beauty product line Dove is starting the "Campaign for Real Beauty",  and has started the Dove  Self-Esteem Fund.
The descritpion says "Too many girls develop low self-esteem from hang-ups about looks and, consequently, fail to reach their full potential in later life.
So, we've created the Dove Self-Esteem Fund as an agent of change to educate and inspire girls on a wider definition of beauty."

Dove has also made two commercials,  one of them being the  very impactful "Evolution" commerical that shows the drastic steps from model to billboard.
It starts with time -lapse hours of make-up, hair dying, hair styling, and then the actual shot.
After the perfect photo, off to photoshop to change the model's facial structure, shoulders, and eyes.
And after that, the photoshoped shot is published.

And we wonder why our perception of beauty is so messed up.

I knew it was bad, but I never realized how much time is spent making these beautiful women look so much unlike them selves, and we wonder how models can have low self-esteem

It truly is horrible; media portrays an image that is nearly impossible to achieve. The message we should really be sending to girls is that each person has her own beauty. God made each one of us unique and we are beautiful to Him. The only time I would really ever encourage a girl to change herself is in a situation where it would truly be better for her health. 'It's not what is on the outside, but on the inside that counts' Ain't that the truth!

You hear about these things all the time, but actually seeing it is pretty eye-opening. I think it's great that Dove is starting this program to promote self esteem among young girls. They need the encouragement given today's media!! Kudos to the big names working to make a difference... by the way, has anyone bought any [red] products to help fight world poverty??
