Holding our Government Accountable: The Secret Hold

Hey, you know what would be really great? If we could find out how exactly the government is spending money on huge multi-million contracts through a searchable database much like Google. Except of course, if you're a politician looking to make some Haliburton-like deals of your own without accountibility.

Republican senator Tom Coburn and Democratic senator Barack Obama proposed a bill that would create said database, The Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act (S.2590). Problem is that a senator has put a hold on this, not allowing the bill to go any further.

There isn't much to be said about this, except really how frustrating is it that a bill that would shed light on what the government is doing is being stopped not just by a hold but an anonymous one at that! Luckily, some watchdog groups are working to smoke out the mysterious senator. May the senator who issued the hold please stand up so that his or her constituents can see the stand-up job that they've done. Porkbusters is making a list of senators who have come out denying the secret hold, asking readers to call their senators to come out and issue denials. Hopefully this will both show Congress how much the American people want something like this and show that American people are also holding senators accountable.

ETA: And there's an update

Sounds good in theory,

THe problem is I will have to make time to really look into it.
The average person wouldn't do that.

But If it is as great as you make it sound its still worth supporting. Government transparency and simplicity is essential to freedom. That's how allot of our freedoms have been encroached on over the years.

And the watchdog groups would surely make use of it

It seems like this kind of thing would be very tough to enforce and who knows if they would actually put anything of importance into it.
If the government is keeping it secret now they will probably find a way to keep is secret if the bill is passed.

They've found out the two responsible for the hold, and there's some news about it since then.
