Happy 4th of "You-lie"

Personally, I don't choose to celebrate Independence Day because none of my people achieved independence on this day.

Instead, we celebrate Juneteenth.  Juneteenth is the oldest nationallly celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

From its Galveston, TX origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, and picnics, and family gatherings. It is time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.  Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long overdue. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities, and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.

Yeah, I've contemplated celebrating Fourth of July because of the same reasons as you. I don't neccessarily celebrate it. I wish my town would have a Juneteenth celebration; we had one a couple of years back when my mom sponsored it...

I don't celebrate any holiday for the preexisting standards and traditions they hold. I don't celebrate the 4th of July for the bull shit notion of "my countries independence", it's more of a way for me to hang out with my family and friends because those are the days designated for school to let you out, or your job to send you home. Holidays are a "freebie day" to celebrate how and whatever you want!

(Hoorah for Juneteenth, though)

Towns in Texas generally celebrate Juneteenth with (almost) as much pride as the Fourth of July. We had a parade and outdoor festival (no rides, but booths and the like). A major road -- Congress Avenue, leads up to the Texas state capital, was closed for the parade and festivities. I hope this type of celebration expands and begins to reach all Americans. It is a great day when you get to celebrated independence :)
