Google: the world's next monopoly?

It's 3:50 in the morning in
New York...so bare with me on this one.

Google has announced its purchase of youtube.com for 1.65 Billion dollars. Allow me to explain to those people who don't know what youtube.com is.  Youtube is a website that allows people to put up their video clips online and share to the people around the world. It is a great way to broadcasting yourself, show your talent, and bunch of other things online.

I am getting the feeling that Google is trying to be the next Microsoft on online websites. Don't get me wrong Google is a great company. Sometimes, I feel it is too much for this company to do so many things. First, it releases Gmail. Then, it decides to do shady business with
China (um...an agreement with the Chinese government to censor certain key words on its search engine). Now, it's Youtube. Google is everywhere. It starts to become more competitive with other companies such as yahoo.com and Microsoft. I want to know what Google is going to do next. Maybe it would launch its own internet provider services.

Many people may ask me: what about Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo and other companies? Well, these companies take their time in expanding businesses. Sometimes, I link the Google to
China because both of them are rising and increasing its revenues faster than any other companies and countries I can think of. The fast growth of Google is making me worry that Google could be the world's next monopoly behind Microsoft. Why do I think like that? Well, first, if you look at the stock market for Google is about 429 dollars per share (http://www.google.com/finance?q=GOOG). Compare to other like Yahoo which is about 25 dollars per share (http://www.google.com/finance?q=YHOO). Do you see the difference? For me, that means, Google has the ability to take control the world's online search engine and the purchase power to buy small website companies such as youtube to be part of their internet business empire. What would happen if Google is decide to buy hi5, facebook, myspace and other source of online entertainment or social networking sites? Does it mean that our source of online entertainment would be control by one company? Do we still have the access to have independent form of online entertainment without being control by one company like Google? I know that this may sound impossible. But just think about it. High purchasing power companies like Google could take over a lot existing internet website services. What happen if Yahoo is now part of Google? Man, Google is about to take over the world. My concern is this: do we still or can we still be able to express online freely and still get information from independent news sources? Because look at mainstream media for example, the news on CBS, NBC and other mainstream channels are being control by corporations. So can internet become something like this also? The more money Google has, the higher chances that it would invest its money to control the world's internet empire. Don't you think so?

I do not believe at all that google is any kind of threat on the Internet. Though, it may be eventually perhaps maybe, but the key issue at hand is net neutrality.

Were you aware that large corporations such AT&T are wanting to privatize the internet? They're wanting to basically literally control the internet. If myspace.com doesn't pay their costs and their fees they will either give them poor service (i.e. take 5 years to load the thing instead of 4 years :P) or, they'd shut them down all together.

Now, that is scarey. Google just got into the internet game a little late, so they don't have the ability to "slowly" expand their business.

I agree. Yahoo has been around for quite a while now.

I hate the idea of privatizing the internet. I like it just the way it is.
