Election Day: June 6, 2006

Several states across the country are holding important primary and special elections:

The most closely watched race today will be California's 50th Congressional District. The San Diego-area district is historically strong Republican, but after Congressman Duke Cunnignham resigned the seat amid scandal, the seat is a potential pick-up for Democrats. The Republican Congressional Campaign Committee has spent a record $10 million trying to defend the seat. A win--or even a close loss--by Democratic Francine Busby would send shockwaves across the country and would be seen by many pundits as a good sign for Democrats in the midterm elections. Polls before the election show the candidates in a statistical dead-heat. In the rest of the state, Democrats will choose a candidate between State Controller Steve Westly and State Treasurer Phil Angelides to take on Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger in the fall. (Polls open 7AM-8PM local time)

In Alabama, Republicans will chose a nominee for the governor's race, between Gov. Bob Riley and wingnut Roy Moore. In the Democratic primary, Lucy Baxley and former governor (and crook) Don Siegelman are running neck and neck. This seat is considered a pickup opportunity for Democrats in November. (Polls open 7AM-7PM local time)

In Iowa, current Governor Tom Vilsack--a potential presidential candidate--may see the defeat of his chosen successor, Mike Clouin, in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, with Sec. of State Chet Culver leading in the polls. (Polls open 7AM-9PM local time)

Montana Republicans will most likely give corrupt Senator Conrad Burns (R) their nomination over state senate minority leader Bob Keenan. Democrats will decide a race considered by pundits to be a "real David v Golliath"--grassroots versus establishment. Voters will choose between John Morrison and Jon Tester. The Senate seat is considered to be a pick-up oppurtunity for Democrats in the fall. (Polls open 7AM-8PM local time)

Tom Kean, Jr. is expected to win his bid for the Republican Senate nomination in New Jersey. Republicans will also choose their candidate in NJ-5, and Democrats in NJ-5 and 13. (Polls open 6AM-8PM local time)

In South Dakota, Democrats will decide who will face Gov. Mike Rounds (R)--the brains behind their anti-choice law. The two Democrats vying for nomination are Jack Billion and Dennis Wiese. (Polls open 7AM-7PM local time)

Mississippi (Polls open 7AM-7PM local time) and New Mexico (Polls open 7AM-7PM local time) are also holding various local primary elections today.

Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack is not term-limited. He chose not to run for re-election.

You're right - Iowa has no term limit.
