Disney or Brothers Grimm

A little more than a week ago, my English class was going over the differences between Disney and Brothers Grimm.

Well I'm sure all of you are familiar with the Disney fairy tales, such as Snow White, Cinderalla, Sleeping Beauty, etc.

But what about the Brothers Grimm fairy tales? They are the same exact fairy tales as the Disney ones except they are a different version. They bring out the reality in the fairytales and are more detailed.

For example in Cinderella all the girls in the villiage that couldn't fit the glass slipper were angry and jealous. But in the Brothers Grimm version, all the girls that couldn't fit the glass slipper ended up cutting there feet so that there feet would become small enough to fit the slipper.

Brothers Grimm makes it's fairytales that way to create a meaning behind the actions that happen through out the fairy tales. For example, the girls cutting off there feet would symbolize how far people go to be accepted in our society. Such as girls wearing make up, or starving themselves. It's a version that is supposed to make you think.

Well, now that you know the difference between the two. We were trying to figure out what version people would let there kids read. The disney version or the Brothers Grimm verion.

Some say the Disney version because they wouldn't want there kids being exposed to things that are put in such detail in the Brothers Grimm version. However, some say Brothers Griimm because they want there children to understand that everything isn't just a fairy tale and that there is a meaning to things thats happen in life.

I'm not sure if it's true with Brothers Grimm, but I heard that fairy tales were first written for adults. Anyway, Hans Christian Andersen's tales are pretty grim, too, and I'm pretty sure he was writing for children.

Anyway, even though I despise Disney from the depths of my soul, it has a version of the fairy tales that are more fitting for children. Children are children and they won't be children for so long. Let them have the sugar-sweet life as long as they can.

If I had a kid of my own, I'd read him/her the Disney version. I don't know about you, but I'd be a a tad bit uncomfortable to read him/her the part where Cinderella's stepsisters cut their toes. It's kind of like sex.

I never heard the Brothers grimm version until now. IT sounds demonic and extremely violent and inappropriate for little children. Although the cutting off the feet symbolizes plastic surgery in our society.
