Do tests really help students perform better in school? Do they really show what someone has learned, or are they just a way to stress students out and deceide who goes to school and who doesn't. Is it not true that some people just don't test well? That the thought of taking a test makes them sweat, freak out and then they are so upset they can't think? Even though they know the material? Yes, I think that is true...because it happens to me. I have never tested well...expect in subjects that I love so much...but still, even in the classes and subjects I enjoy, just the thought of a "test" freaks me out. I don't know what goes though other people's minds when they take a test, but I know that when you call something a "test", people freak out. But if you gave someone "homework" and then used it as a test grade, you'd be surprised at how it turned out. Many of the people who test well fail to do homework because it doesn't count as much a test. And the students who don't always do well on tests (sometimes they do) usually do all the homework and extra credit just to bring their grades up. Some of these students are also the ones who speak up in class, and even spend time after to discuss with the teacher. Of course, not all of this is true. It varies depending on the area, teachers, and students, but this is what I have noticed at my school. And it scares me. Tests are used all the time in are daily lives, and I wish there was a way to be more fair. There are exceptions...such as a driver's test among others. Without these tests, there would be no way to move that you can drive, and we wouldn't want these people on the streets. Even the tests for colleges (ACT, SAT) are probably a good idea because you can retake them, but the timed thing also stresses people out and in turn they don't do as well. All I am really trying to say is that there shouldn't be as many tests, but more homework, or assigments in class. (Just don't call it a "test" and have it due at the end of the hour...no chance of cheating) As for college, I wish that students could do homework, because two tests to give a grade for the whole semster? That really is not fair!
I realize this will never change, but this is what I wish. (sorry if this is confusing, I haven't completly sorted out my ideas.)
Are Tests Helpful or Harmful?

Does anyone know how I can stop commenting after I post? Somehow I always "comment" and then I can't delate it, only edit it? (which I'm doing now)

College is not supposed to be fair. You are supposed to learn about a subject so you can go off and have a career and not work at McDonalds.
And I hate testing, especially when they do it to kids in 1st and 2nd grade. They just started school, its uneccessary.
I guess I can understand the college part, but if people pay so much to go to college, why do they make it so easy for them to fail?
And besides testing little kids, they also hold them back because they don't color in the lines! (that happened to one of my friends)

As in life, so it goes in school. Everything is ultimately a test - homework assignments, extra credit, the actual tests themselves. Each tests your ability and the amount of effort you can/will put forward.
By the way, the ability to color in the lines is a motor function often used by therapists, counselors, and teachers to judge both the physical and mental development of a child.
tests don't really help students. they are just used as a way determine which are the better ones
