As big of a hit as Al Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth became this summer, and however real and crucial Gore's message of the dangers of increasing Global Warming is, it seems the United States government isn't interested in working to solve such an imminent and threatening problem, instead preferring to focus on helping out oil companies and industry that does the most polluting of the environment. Instead of trying to save natural environments, millions of animal species, as well as the health of the entire human population, they've turned a blind eye. Now, Al Gore is teaming up with the US's top ally, Great Britain, to try and spring the US government into action.
Britain is to send the author of today's landmark review on global warming to try to win American hearts and minds to the urgent cause of cutting carbon emissions - as it emerged yesterday that the government has already signed up former US vice-president Al Gore to advise on the environment.
Sir Nicholas Stern, who this morning publishes an authoritative report on climate change warning that inaction could cause a worldwide recession as damaging as the Depression of the 1930s, will lobby politicians and business people in America at the turn of the year.
At at time when many 2008 Presidential contenders are working to shore up support and start raising money, Vice President Gore is doing everything he can to try and solve this ultra-important issue. My guess is that he has an eye on the presidency as well, which makes this effort even more commendable, since it leaves him at a bit of a time disadvantage. Maybe now that the global warming crisis is put in dollars and SENSE (global warming causing huge rises in health care costs thanks to allergies, overheating, environment changing; massive destruction of coastal cities; rise in pollution), the Republican President and Congress (though let's hope it becomes a Democratic one next week!) will start taking notice.
