I Heart the UN

I will say that I’m an idealist.  I believe in utopian societies, and happiness consuming the world.  At the same I know that my ideal future is not going to come for some time.  In the meantime, however, we have the UN, which has recently made a triumph.  Human rights are a major issue at the UN right now, and the President of the General Assembly has been making a proposal to reform the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.  The proposal includes adopting human rights standards, making treaties and algorithms to determine the performance of a government, and so on.  The topic is been a huge political battleground, as the writer, Jimmy Carter, suggests, since it would leave many countries vulnerable to an evaluation.  If any country is not in par with the UN’s standards, they will be suspended from the body.  I am proud because even though this proposal has brought on an onslaught of controversy, it is definitely making its way to enforcement.  With time I do believe that the UN can raise the standard of living all over the world, protect global citizens from human rights violations, and preserve the peace.  In the past, my hopes for utopia have never actualized, but this is a definite step in that direction.

I'm not sure that evaluating the members of the UN is really in our best interest. I mean, ideally speaking, it's great to make sure that everyone is on track and doing what they are supposed to be doing. But, the US is currently breaking several of the UN Charter's obligations. For example, as a member, the US is obligated to not threaten or actually act violently toward another nation...I have one word in response to that: Iraq.

While it may be a good idea to try to get UN members to "follow the rules" and to evaluate how well they are doing so, I have a feeling that by actually enforcing the idea of suspending nations from the UN is only going to hurt us in the long run.
