So Your Opinion Doesn't Matter?

Your vote may matter more than ever in 2008.

Four senators - Pete Domenici (R-NM), Chuck Hagel (R-NE), John Warner (R-VA) and Wayne Allard (R-CO) - have already announced or will annouce their plans to retire. Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) may be dropped from the Republican party due to his arrest earlier this year. Sen. Craig initially announced plans to resign his position and plead guilty to lewd conduct; however, he later pledged to complete his term and moved for lesser charges of disorderly conduct.

This is an important time for young voters to have their voices heard. At least four states will be losing senators who have been acting for a decade or more. The "youngest" Sens. Hagel and Allard have served since 1997. Warner has been a senator since 1979, and Domenici has continuously served New Mexico since 1973, giving him the longest tenure in the history of the state. These vacancies need to be filled by politicians who are in-tune with the values of a changing American public.

The best way to ensure that this happens is to educate yourself and vote. The element most conducive to a productive democracy is a well-informed and active voting base. Instead of griping about radical politicians tearing down the foundations of our government, make a move to include some who will rebuild it our way.
