If Obama is elected into the presidency how will this affect race relations in America?

Never in our countrys young history have we ever seen such a histoiral campaigin taking place. First off with Barack Obama, the first time a African American (technically he's bi-racial) stands a real shot of making U.S. history with his name living forever in infainty, as the first. So what could this mean?

Obama, well if he wins, gets the bid and gets elected, I'd love to see our countrys reaction. Being the first non-white guy it will be a great milestone considering 50 years ago in the south he wouldn't have even been allowed to ride on the front of the bus becauseof his skin color, let alone getting elected to lead the free world.

As for people that say "Well American isnt ready for a non-white president". I say so what? So, when will we be ready? We weren't ready when the country broke into a civil war, we weren't ready when slaves were freed, we weren't ready when women were given the right to vote, we weren't ready for school de-segregation, but even if we are still trying to overcome those things, we cant just sit and say "Well we aren't not ready" because if we did, if we did just sit and wait until we were "comfortable" none of those things would have happened, things would be very, very different and not in a good way.

I think a lot of us and even him himself know that there is a chance that if elected he could quite frankly get killed just because of the color of his skin, becuase a lot of people just might not want to see a black person running the country, its sad but true. You think about JFK, Lincoln and what they've done and what their fates have ultimatley been, but its just a question of are you willing to stand up and say enough, if you can do a decent job then I will vote for you, you will not be judged on the color of your skin rather by your merit.

Yes race might not biologically exists, but socially it is very much a real thing.

I also know that could happen with any president but, you have to admit sadly it might be a higher risk for him. So what are your views? If by chance elected how will this affect race relations in this country? Or do you just think people are making a big deal out of it? And if you do think that do you think we are stalling progress (as a country)as far as realizing our own prejudice by saying it doesn't exist?

Sure, there are 4 others people running but they don't by any means face the same obsticles.

P.S. I don't care who you are voting for, please address the questions asked.

P.P.S. I'm still undecided.Oh please Oh please Oh please...

I wrote this blog after reading this article from the NY Times.

“I fear that they just would kill him, that he wouldn’t even have a chance,”

"Pollsters caution that polling in a contest like this can be unreliable
because whites might not be telling the truth when they say they will
vote for a black man, and blacks might not be telling the truth when
they say they are undecided."

"Another striking theme that emerged in the interviews was how often
these women described an almost maternal concern for Mr. Obama’s
safety, which they take seriously by noting that he was given Secret
Service protection in May, earlier than any presidential candidate ever
except Mrs. Clinton, who already had protection as a former first lady."

"They said they were also trying to calculate
whether a black man or a white woman had a better chance of being
elected. Which would encounter more resistance from the white male
power structure? Would a black man stir up racial tensions that would
boomerang and set African-Americans back?"

I was the Mid-Michigan regional coordinator for Michiganders for Obama, the official volunteer organization supporting his campaign in the state. I only held the position for a short period of time, a conflict between myself and the head of the organization required that I step down. This had nothing to do with Barack, just campaign politics.

I am very hopeful that Barack will win the nomination. There are several very key elements in place that makes him a realistically electable candidate. For the record, I'm white.

Am I some kind of white apologist or cultural leech? No. I support Barack Obama because he has just the right balance of experience and inexperience. Inexperienced enough to not have been corrupted by the atmosphere in Washington, yet capable enough to get the job done. When I listen to him talk, I hear the words of a individual who honestly believes that our generation can pioneer tremendous and sweeping changes in America.

Do I think America is ready for Barack Obama? No. And that is exactly why we need him. Do I think he is going to significantly change race relations in the U.S.? I don't think so. Those who have been grandfathered into racism will continue to grandfather their children into the same despicable ideology. Hopefully when they grow up, some of them will be forced to see the truth through day to day interactions they can't avoid.

Honestly the man has much more to offer then just the color of his skin. I encourage you to listen to his thoughts and ideas. We are not electing the representative of the black race, as some of the media would have you believe. We are electing the President of the United States.

I think that race relations are very dynamic, and that the current state of things will continue to change for the better, whether or not he gets elected. For example, dating outside of race has become much more accepted. Personally if he is elected president, I would enjoy watching inept would be race war assassins and their organizations get life in prison or disappear in a hail of FBI gunfire.

I would go out on a limb and say he would have more than a few assassination attempts. He was the first canidate to recieve secret service protection so that means he's been getting a lot of death threats. I think he'd be a great leader but I could almost guarentee people would try to kill him.

I think it all depends on how Obama handles the race issue within America. He can't be a coward just because he has a very high risk for assassination. He should place his best effort into the race relations issue.
I find it very sad that, to some people, he will not only be representing himself but the whole black race. If Obama gets elected and does a very poor job as president, what will be the chances of another black president being elected? I think this places a very heavy burden on his part.

Yeah, I dislike when people do that That's so mean! but thats what some people make him out to be which is sad he has the "representative of a entire group of people" stigma, on top of race, his experience, etc *rolls eyes*

i'm voting for edwards. i was leaning towards obama initially, but when i telephoned his hq, no one would answer my questions. you get a telemarketer, not a campaign staffer. i waited three months, sent emails. all i received in return was requests for another campaign contribution. i liked him at first, but he doesn't have any real plans for jobs or the economy. seems like he is copying from other candidates.

I think that places in the mid west like Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisanna will have problems. Assination attempts, more death threats. Problems. it is unfortunate that, I think that but when you look at the close minded people we have in the country. You know someone will get stupid and try to murder him.

His skin color really doesn't have anything to do with the reasons I'm not voting for him.
I think if the right man were to step up and he happened to be black, I would support him maybe even more for breaking the mold.

I simply do not think Obama is the right guy to run the country.

It's sad that people look at skin color rather than the heart, skin is skin we all have the same insides.

I do sadly think he would have many attempts on his life based on his skin color, I mean there are people that are just filled with hate or are looking for something to take there anger out on.

Ditto, voting for someone based on their skin color is ridiculous, unfortunately people haven't gotten the memo. That's so mean! The only reason we are various shades of brown in the first place is simply biological (Africa>hot> more melanin to protect skin)(Europe>not as hot>less melanin to protect skin). Okay not THAT simple but you get my point ;)
