More on Homophobia

Today my friend and I got into troble at my school. The problem was, in my opinion, that our teacher is prejudice and homophobic. It was after class was over and we had some free time to do whatever we wanted. I was a little tired and was leaning on my friend, just leaning against her arm, and the two of us got sent to the office and recieved a day of in school suspension for it. Now there are two other people in my calss, a guy and a girl, who do things of this nature all the time. Often one lays down and literally rests their head in the other's lap. These two students never get into trouble for it. However when my friend and I, two girls, barely have body cotact it is seen as an innappropriate display of affection. The only conclusion I am left to draw is that my teacher is homophobic. When we went to the office and explained this all to the principal, minus my predjudice and homophobic theroy of course, we had a conferance with the teacher. When I tried to explain my point of view, again without the predjedice and homophobic theory, I was told that if I kept arguing then I would be written up for insubordination as well. Now I ask you, is any of this fair or just?

most definitely not fair or just. society needs to be more comfortable with homosexuality. and i love how you were not doing anything to convey homosexuality at all. teachers are stupid and they never respect you.

Not fair. Perhaps you should take a picture of these 2 people in class, and or show it to your parents. Make them speak with the principal. It is not fair. Your rights were broken, make a big deal, so that your teacher can learn.

I don't know if this is true in your state, but in California that's illegal. You should deffinatly check your states laws. You could get your teacher fired. he, he.

If you don't want to change the world, then why are you alive?

First of all, if you feel that strongly about it discuss it with your parents/guardians.

Secondly, you're probably correct about them being homophobic. Anything or anyone who is considered "different" is usually perceived as a threat. Add to that the fact that these feelings are reinforced by religious doctrine from the Bronze Age and you have trouble for anyone who doesn't conform to the norm.

Third, the teacher and principal might have been covering their asses. This doesn't excuse ignorance or bigotry, but more and more schools are becoming religiously politicized and this is what happens when issues other than education take over the system. If a school board member or parent with Bronze Age values happens to be in school on a given day and sees what they interpret as being homosexual activity they are likely to create a nightmare for everyone, flapping and squawking with righteous indignation.

Any legal challenge should be preceded by having an attorney quietly approach the principal to explain the legal ramifications, thus avoiding public humiliation, drawing unnecessary attention and/or forcing his/her hand. Now, I don't want to discourage anyone from bringing in lawyers, but be aware of what could happen. It will likely fuel a local and possibly national controversy that will polarize the community, bring you lots of unwanted publicity, cause you to be threatened by people of Bronze Age mentality who claim to believe "god is love," and run up a bill equal to the gross national product of a small South American country.

In any case, I wish you well.
