Yes, you read that title right. I was just as shocked as you are now when I came out of my first Life Fitness lecture.
The fact is you have to eat in order to lose weight and be healthy. I know from personal experience after watching my mom try a million different diet and exercise methods. Society tells us that in order to lose weight you have to starve your body so that it will use the fat that you already have in order to survive. This is a flat out lie. oh yes, if you decide to never eat again, then you'll lose weight but most of us are not ready to do that because of serious side effects (death).
Let me give you an overview of the my Life Fitness lecture to help you better understand what I'm trying to say:
Your body, as my instructor loves to say, thinks that you are an idiot. It has been geared to do certain things so that when you decide to go and do something stupid, you will survive longer. One of the things that it does is assume that you will never eat again after two hours of not eating anything. After two hours it takes all of the fat in your system and puts it in little storage tanks around your hips and waist. It won't use any of this fat until you have done a cardio exercise for at least thirty minutes because it is saving the fat (aka potential energy) for when you really need it.
Thus, in order to use fat so that it doesn't collect where you don't want it, you have to eat a small snack once every two hours. In order to burn the fat that you already have stored up you have to eat a snack once every two hours and exercise for at least thirty minutes about three times per week (preferably more). Who would have thought?
