Do People Discriminate Against their Own Race?

Tagged:  •

I have been thinking about race a lot lately. People always talk about whites judging us black people, but do we judge each other. Take the media for example, darker skinned women are either depicted as exotic or not at all. Light skinned black women are seen as the most beautiful kind of black women. Brown skin women like myself are usually overlooked. It is not only white people who practice this kind of judgement but black people do it to ourselves. Do other races judge their counterparts so harshly?

People will discriminate no matter if it's their own race, or a different one, just as long as they feel good about it. My uncle has said that "browner" hispanics are not as good as white ones, but the funny thing is that he is the same color...Don't be surprised if people discriminate about their own colors and races.

People will dicriminate but is there a way that we can limit it? Being racist toward your own people is completely absurd! People should judge individual personalities not skin colors. At a point discrimination can turn into hate, racism, and low self-esteem. I understand your comment and agree, but if we are going to rise up as a human race we have to stop judging and start loving.

i think you are so right i feel that it our own race we discriminate more because ,we evny people like use.Ithink we project our own dislike on to those who and in some way like us.

I agree that there is discrimination between people of the same race. Humans will always discriminate, in my opinion, because it is in our nature to do so. Look at history we have always disliked some race for no valid reason. I think we discriminate to make ourselves feel better about who we are.

I do not discrinate against my race. However, I do discriminate against people who are of the same race as me. I do not discriminate because of race but because of peoples behaviors and dress mostly. Of course I try not too at all, but it is difficult to keep quiet when people are always walking around like the world hates them. Get some confidence. This goes for anyone, black, white, or poka dot. Also, for a GREAT movie on racism, watch CRASH, it won best picture at the oscars, and for very good reason. I have to admit most academy award winning movies are boring, but this one is excellent and anything but boring. Keep it real people.

Crash is an AMAZING movie.
(did you notice that the only one in that movie who really wasn't racist was the Mexican guy who had a daughter?)

Just look at some comedy movies like Soul Plane or The Hebrew Hammer or My Big Fat Greek Wedding. They are all stereotypes of what those races are like. Stereotypes will always be around, no matter what your race is. It's whether or not if you take the stereotypes seriously that's the problem. Most things in the media like that are JOKES and made for entertainment. Movies like that really shouldn't be taken seriously.

I definitely agree with you. I am Chinese, and my mother (as well as my cousins and relatives), hail from the island of Taiwan. They hold some type stereotypes against mainland Chinese. And even in mainland, they have bias towards different provinces.

It's kinda like how someone from say, San Francisco may have a bias against San Jose.

it's a sad thing to know that people give their own race sterotypes. at my school they call me an oreo (black on the outside white on the inside) because they say i dont act "black".

Not only do blacks do it but every other race does it as well & there is tons to be found in history along those lines. I had a boss who was white but was racist against whites when it came to blacks. My girlfriend works for people who are the same way. It is O.K. for blacks and other races to do things within the company to do things and act in certain ways but let a white person do even a tenth of it or bring legitimate documentation for this and that the boss is hungry to get rid of the white person. So it is not just confined to just Blacks but to all races. If you want historical evidence then look to signs of it as oppression in a civil war, or the crusades, the holy wars, the inquisitions, etc. Racism wether it be between one or more races has been around almost as long as humanity itself. Look back to the early Biblical period of Cain & Abel. If Cain could have he would have enslaved his own brother if for no other reason than jealousy.
