Diplomatic Immunity

Bridge's picture

Foreign diplomats coming to our country are granted what is called diplomatic immunity. This immunity makes it so the diplomat cannot be imprisoned for committing a crime—not even for drug trafficking or murder. This stuff should be on Ripley’s, because whether you believe it or not, it’s real.

The major issue here—at least to me—is whether this is right. Should a guest in our country be granted more rights than the citizens born and raised here? I don’t think so, and this statement is not on the grounds of racism or even remotely similar to how some people regard illegal immigration. No, I don’t want the immunity lifted because these people are foreigners.

What I believe is so wrong here are the special privileges given to people for no special reason. All men are created equal, correct? So excluding people who are already criminal and have their rights stripped of them, everyone should have the same rights. What was once considered right—like equality—is getting harder to understand in these times, and we should think twice about ridiculous things like diplomatic immunity.
