College- Advice

I don't really understand the difference between getting a degree in criminal justice from Harvard and getting a degree in criminal justice from, say, Alabama State University. When you come out of it, isn't it just the same education? Sure, Harvard is an Ivy League school, but in the long run, who cares?

Is college a lot different than high school? I have heard that my high school prepares the students well for college. But, is it a lot different, from your experience?

Freshman 15-methods to avoid it?

Making friends? For the introverts out there, what are ways to get yourself into social situations? I think that college would be horrible if you didn't have friends.

How to help alleviate homesickness? This is something that I've always had trouble with. I even get homesick when I'm staying with my grandma for a week, and some of my siblings are there. (but my parents aren't). How did you deal with this, if it occurred?

The food- I'm somewhat of a picky eater. Have there ever been times when there was nothing you liked in the cafeteria? What did you do then?

Share experiences, good and bad, and offer advice. This is sort of a college help blog. Don't limit it to the topics above.

Sorry to the two people who commented on this, but I was hoping for a bigger turnout, so trying again. Go ahead and comment again if you'd like.

I feel as if I've replied to this exact same blog before. I'm not going to retype everything I wrote before, though. I'm sorry the other entry posted, along with all of it's comments, seems to have disappeared. I actually put a lot of thought into the comment I left before, and it bothers me that it's been deleted.

I apologize. Know that I took your advice to heart, but that I was hoping more people would respond- I wanted more ideas. Thank you for commenting on the last post, and I'm sorry that your comment, and the post, were deleted.

Well, I would try a forum maybe. Deleting and reposting the same thing is almost cheating... if you don't get responses you can always add a comment to your own blog and it will appear in the "active threads" section. I won't leave my advice again either, hope it helped the first time though.

It certainly did- Thanks for this advice too, I'm new to this, and didn't realize adding comments improved the "newness" (lack of a better word) of the thread. Again, I apologize that your comments were deleted. They were very worthwhile.

College experiences differ for different people.
For the most part, yes! College is different from high school. And yes, choosing the "right" college is very important. Depending on what you choose to study, a degree from an Ivy League or other top school can be quite different than a degree from a less-known college or university. It also depends on where you want to go after graduation. If you plan on sticking around the area where you go to college, a degree from any smaller uni is usually just fine. If you want to go somewhere far away and want the name of your uni to be known, then you may want to consider a larger, more known college. Sure, you can get the same degree from a number of places, but depending on your life goals, it can make a difference to go to a more known place.

College food... most places have loads of variety to choose from. Eat smart and try new things. College is all about trying new things. About the "freshman 15" ... just be smart about what you eat. Eat some fresh fruits and veggies every day, and spend some time working out. Most schools have a good gym for students to use. Take advantage of it!

Homesickness? #1 cure: Get involved. Join clubs and activities... there's something for everyone!! This is a great way to meet other students as well as faculty.

College can be an incredible experience. Use this tiime to meet others and grow personally. Try new activities and get out there to meet people. Stay involved and you can have a great time! Good luck!
