Legalizing Narcotics

Tagged:  •    •

Illegal drugs have been a problem in the United States for quite some time. Everything from marijuana, to crack, crystal meth, and heroine can be found in the streets of this country. If these substances were legalized would there still be such a demand for them? It would possibly reduce the number of crimes committed in an attempt to score some of these drugs. Legalizing these narcotics would also allow governments to help prevent the spread of diseases which pose a major public health concern. Because the use of these drugs are illegal, users are reluctant to admit their use, leaving medical professionals to resort to tests to determine what is going on. California now offers "injection clinics" for those who are addictied to heroine to come in and get clean needles to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, and a slew of other diseases associated with drug users.
Gangs have long used "foot soldiers" to sell illegal drugs in order to finance their operations. Many states in this country and the law enforcement protecting them can attest to the fact that gang violence is grotesque and that most of it has to do with "turf issues." The reasons many gangs do not want anyone on their "turf" is because they are selling drugs and view outsiders as a potential "threat" to their business. Legalizing narcotics would sure put the gangs out of business and possibly reduce the levels of crime associated with them.
Although I mention legalizing narcotics I do not that their should be no limitations. The "heroine/injection clinics" in California are a realistic method of addressing drug use. While drug use definately carries medical implications and possible death, its use by individuals needs to be addressed in a realistic fashion. Ronald Regan's "war on drugs" simply resulted in massly crowded prisons and made the price of narcotics sky rocket. Did it reduce drug use? I suppose the statistics can only tell if it did or not.

The government should legalize certain drugs. It can help out every aspect of society such as the economy by placing a tax and watering down the drug so that we can control the amounts being accessed.

thanks for the post. Did you know children are now gaining access to crystal meth mixed with strawberry kool aid so it tastes like rock candy. the war on drugs just isn't working.

That just sounds ridiculous. It sounds like scare tactic propaganda more than reality. Do you have an actual source for that?

The War on drugs has been remarkably ineffective. LSD, mescaline and quaaludes are about the only drugs that have been massively affected. Even the DEA website admits that cocaine price and purity have stayed about the same for the last twenty or thirty years. Same with heroin. Marijuana is the number one cash crop in America. It simply is not working on almost any level.
