Today I was doing the regular task of fillling up my car with gas. I went inside and decided to buy some food. As I walked to the counter I noticed a guy whom I knew was deaf and had seen at deaf community events. I really wanted to converse with him. I thought about seeing if he needed help with paying but than I realized it would be offensive, because despite people's opinon, deaf people are completley functional in society and you don't need your hearing to communicate.
So! I bought my drink and my chimichanga and went to walk out when we made eye contact in line. My first instinct was to sign, but I couldn't because I was holding my food. He looked at me blankly for a minute, than we both started laughing. We couldn't communicate because my hands were full!! It was hysterical and ironic. All the other hearing people in the line just stared at us bewildered. I though it was interesting how a deaf person just blends in until they start signing. Hm! It made me appreciate ASL as its own unique language. Because if it were like a spaniard and I was learning spanish we could have communicated. Since it was ASl though, it required my hands.
Another interesting thing that I witnessed today happened at my school. I was turning in my running start application. As the the lady behind the counter registered me on the computer, she whistled and said, "Those running start students sure are a sharp cookie. They are more on top of it than anyone else! I am always suprised by them."
I responded by saying that I think a lot of people underestimate the young. It made me feel good and kind of let down at the same time to hear an adult be so amazed at the organization and dedication of a young person.
Anyways, just a few moments from my day. Feel free to comment and dont forget to provide a rating.
Do you think people underestimate the youth?
Do you if your an adult distrust and underestimate the youth?
What do you think and know about deaf people?
luv, Monica

Instead of providing questions solely for your readers to answer, you should answer them yourself. Readers will often be more interested in blog entries that include: 1. personal opinion mixed with A. facts or B. other opinions, 2. a personal narrative (you telling the story of meeting so-and-so, and 3. relating to the goals set by Progressive U.
Then you'll get some better ratings.
