Hi I’m Hershey your reporter for this major story on a girl name Pecola Breedlove. As you know I’m not just your reporter in charge of this newspaper. Pecola Breedlove is now age 24. I’m telling the story of and how she dealt with pain in harsh ways dealing with the following: beauty, self-hatred, culture, what is was like to be rape, verbally abuse, and abandoned.
Pecola Breedlove born in the hometown of Lorain, Ohio was eleven years old when she prays for her eyes to turn blue so that she will be as beautiful as the blue-eyed children in America. She didn’t want just blue eyes. She wanted the bluest eyes of them all not just a color, a color that would stand out form all the other white blue-eyed kids.
Pecola had one brother named Sammy. Her mom was Pauline and her dad was name Cholly. In terms her brother ran away from town long ago when she was age 12. Her mom was beat up by her drunken father when coming home. Sammy, Pecola said, “Sammy and I would look for escape route in their own ways. Sammy would frequently run away to get away from the family.”
During winter a girl arrives at the school Pecola, Frieda, and Claudia go to. Maureen, Pecola told me had long hair, green eyes, light skin, and pretty clothes. In class the teachers would call on Maureen and Pecola said, “Claudia was disgusted with her. Frieda, Claudia, and Pecola would make fun of Maureen sometimes by calling her “ Six-finger-dog-tooth-meringue-pie.” Maureen and Pecola went into the ice-cream shop that day they called her this name. Pecola got two dips of orange-pineapple and Maureen with black raspberry. Frieda and Claudia thought Maureen was being nice to Pecola because of the boys and were embarrassed. The boys picking on Pecola were making fun of her calling her Black e mo ya daddy sleeps nekked.
Frieda and Claudia were sisters. Frieda, age 11, made important decisions and was
sensitive and concerned about Pecola. Claudia, age 9, is warm hearted but was jealous and felt threatened by the ways and requirements of beauty like Shirley Temple when ignoring the black children and calling blacks ugly and dirty.

Peocla one day told me she meta boy on the playground where she was walking and he asked her to come inside his house when asking her if she liked kittens. Pecola said “ I really wasn’t sure about going into his home” The boy’s name was junior despite she went in. Junior threw the cat meanly on her face and it scratches her. The cat rubs up on her and she bends down to pet it. Next Junior takes the cat and starts swinging it around and it lands against the window and fell on the heater. His mom Geraldine walks in and blames the cat’s death on Pecola and tells her to get out cussing at her.
Spring arrives and Pecola told me “ Claudia sister breasts were touch by Mr. Henry and then was beaten by their father. Mr. Henry was a middle-aged boarder taken in by the MacTeers and invites prostitutes into the MacTeer’s home. These prostitutes Marie, China, and Poland were most often visited and had talks with by Pecola. Pecola told me about her mom’s younger days when her mom was fascinated with Hollywood ideals of beauty. Staring famous movie starts like Jean Harlow as true representations as beauty. Where Pauline worked this is why she treated their daughter, the Fishers, like she was her own daughter. It was the closet Pauline could get to and come absorb by their white lifestyle.
Cholly then Pecola told me, Hershey, was abandoned by his mother and father and is raised by his Aunt Jimmy, who later dies. Cholly had his first sexual intimacy with Darlene. They were caught in the woods by tow white hunters and Cholly was embarrassed. He though Darlene might be pregnant so he runs away to Macon, GA to find his father and when he does his father doesn’t want nothing to do with him. Cholly runs to Kentucky and eventually meets Pauline and then he marries her and had Pecola and Sammy.
Pecola’s worst thing that happened in her life was her father raped her. Cholly comes home drunk one afternoon and sees Pecola in the kitchen washing dishes. She reminded him for a moment of his wife, and in a fit of confusion and love, he rapes Pecola. He leaves her on the kitchen floor feeling ashamed and regaining consciousness from the pain in between her legs with her mother looming over her.
Elihue Micah Whitcomb or Soaphead Church was a physic leader who came from a racially mixed family of white and Chinese ancestry. This accounts for his supervisory towards others. Pecola visits him to make her have blue eyes. He tricks her into poisoning on an old, sick dog, that he hates. He tells Pecola that if the dog behaves badly strangely then that was a sign from God that they would turn blue the next day.
Summer comes and Pecola was pregnant by her father. Claudia tells of how she and Frieda had heard rumors and gossip that Pecola was pregnant. Peocla said “ I though I would be accepted into the world ad a pretty girl like the other blue-eyed children. Instead grown people looked away; children, those who were not frightened by her, laughed outright.” Claudia and Frieda bury the seeds and said the marigolds would bloom. Instead, Frieda was right Claudia planted them to deeply and instead the MacTeer sisters avoided Pecola.
Pecola told me she was left to talk to her imaginary friends about the new blue eyes she thinks she now has and was concerned about them being the bluest eyes in the world. Pecola driven herself into madness over these blue eyes and were left into a miscarriage. Her mom still worked for the white folks, Sammy ran away from town long ago and Cholly died in the workhouse.
Pecola told me the main things about the book called The Bluest Eye, which was all about her written by Toni Morrison. It was culture, beauty, and self-hatred. Many people have to deal with this everyday regardless of where they go. In the year this happen was 1941 in the fall just before the momentous year (the beginning of WW2 for the US). When Pecola lived in a home that use to be a store Pecola was treated badly and like an animal. Today her is her story of how she lived through her preteen years. I hoped you enjoyed it!!

This is my newspaper project for one of my classes and it teaches a very important lesson about abuse, self-hatred, beauty, cluture, and more. The actaul book is written by Toni Morrison and if you read the book BELOVED and saw the movie she is also the writer of this book and it was impactful and a wonderful book to read.
