A College Degree is the New High School Diploma - The Education Standard

Years ago, the college education wasn't for everyone. Only a select few went. It wasnt nessairy to spend all that money on a degree. Simply because you could find a decent job with out going to school. College wasn't a "requiremwnt" it wasn't nessary.

Now-a-days almost everyone goes to college. Our k-12 education is all about preparing us for "the college experence." Getting used to standardized testing so we pass the ACTs and SATs with flying colors. Practising prefect essay writting techniques so we nail that college application essay. Everything we do is centered arround college. And the fact is most students do go to college. Unless you want to chance working at the local fast food joint you go and get a degree.

The number students are trying to get in to college is increasing and the number of spots arn't increasing. That isnt the only problem, the cost for 'higher' education is rising - not good. This 'higher' education has become the standard and the price is rising. The college degree has taken the place of the high school diploma. So say we go to college after fighting for our spot and our finincial aid then what are we supposed to do to set ourselves apart form the other college grads? What is next?

I think the answer is get a job, unless people already have one.

You're right. It's weird now that people don't go to college. I think that just shows how much the world has grown.

these are the reasons the cost of college has increased so much. it has become an inelastic good versus an elastic one. it is no longer seen as an option.

I agree with many things that you have said, but I don't agree that college is something that everyone has the option or even the desire to do. Although I do attend college because I feel it is the best option for me, for some people, there are better options. I graduated with many people who went into the military after high school. Many of these people are making great lives for themselves and are pretty set financially. Another option that some people choose is to work on the railroad. Engineers are greatly needed in the midwestern part of the country and they pay unbelieveably great! Although I agree that many people must attend college in order to get a good job, but please remember that it is not a "requirement" in order to have a good life!
