I've just recently picked my classes for next year (senior year) and I seem to have picked the hardest classes ever. From 3 AP classes to dacathalon. I'm still not sure whether I'll be put into all the classes I picked, but I have a few pointers that will help (maybe) other high school students pick their classes. One thing, pick the classes that will benefit YOU, not your buddies. Don't worry about what your friends picked, because in the end the classes that you pick will either help you or mess you up. If you think you can't handle certain classes and you know you won't pass, then go for something easier. But always try to keep that sense of being challenged. Colleges and universities will pick someone who signed up for AP government and tried to pass the test over someone who picked regular and got a C. Barely passing. They like students who try to apply themselves. Also, don't pick classes that will kill you and at the same time, don't pick classes that won't challenge you. If you screwed up the first two years, like a friend of mine did, but then got your act together in the end, good - colleges see that! My friend didn't care what grades he got the first two years of high school, but then started getting his act together and is now accepted to three UCs (university of california - top schools) and has one pending.
Another thing, if you have any questions or concerns, go to your high school counselor. They know best. Don't leave questions to the very end, because then you won't be able to go back.
I know some students that will like to have senior year as "kick back", but senior year still counts. Don't think that only because its your last year in high school, it won't screw you up, because it can.
Anyway, I hope everyone picks the classes that will benefit you in the long run, instead of getting the same classes as your buddies.

hey that is so true.
6 AP exams, robotics, and reading/blogging. I had no time at all, but it was all worth it in the end. Which AP's did you sign up for?

I signed up for AP lit, AP government & AP chemistry. The rest are all college bound classes. Ew, i hate the robotics coach. =/
But it really depends on the teacher. Plus, the ugly truth is, literary analysis is one of those skills where some things just can't be taught. With Gov you should start reading right away, and make sure to spend a lot of time learning the processes.

Decatholon is a challenging class and I have one high school credit in the class. Did you know that if you are in the decatholon team in Arizona twice that you can get a 2,000 dollar scholarship? Also, I would agree that students should see their counsolors. Students can get duel credit to get rid of core classes. Duel credit is when you go to college and pass a class there to also count as credit towards high school. My counsolor also informed me that if I am in the top two percent of my high school class that I could get a full ride scholarship for a university belonging to my state (Arizona).
AP classes, well those classes offer a chance at getting college credit like you said and students should keep in mind of their life styles before advancing to a higher leveled class.
I hope that some of this is helpful to readers.
Lucky you. I would have been thrilled to get a free ride. Of course, I didn't want to go to college in the same state as my high school, but that's so not the point.

You have some good advice here, but there's something I'd want to add. Pick classes that you'd enjoy and that you're interested in. First, colleges like to see that you take classes that interest you, and second, you want to have a good time rather than punish yourself with classes you hate, right?
If students don't have the desire to succeed, then they won't.
I've taken 2 college classes and I'm taking one right now. For my tech class, the teacher has professors come teach and we get high school and college creds.
Yeah, colleges want you to stand out. Did you know that to try to be admitted into law school that you don't have to have a specific major?
Don't need one for medical school either, but it's a helluva lot harder to get into medical school than it is to get into law school.

i signed up for choir, AP literature and comp. For a soon to be senior, I think my schedule is actually lighter than it has been the past 3 years. I also signed up for government and speech
I signed up for AP Lit and AP US History last year... And now I'm not even going to take those tests. Instead, I'm planning on taking the AP Spanish Lang. and AP Eng. Grammar. It's not that I wasted my time, per say, because I had planned on taking all four exams... But as I got down to it, my interest in Lit wained, and I realized that History interests me... And I kind of wanna take it again. Haha.
My Lit teacher is FURIOUS that I'm not taking the exam. I'm really good at contextual clues (yay Theatre!), and I'm good at picking out random things... And, when we had to do a practice multiple choice one Tuesday, I ended up giving out some of my answers (we had less than five minutes left in class, and they had 25 questions left... I brought it out to about 10), I guess most of the answers I gave them were correct. Go me?
(She's not an interesting professor, and I don't really care about her kids and her own life, when we're supposed to be learning about Frankenstein's possible themes. kthnx)
