My mother is on myspace

My mother is on Myspace. You read it right!
As I logged on for the first time in weeks, I noticed a "Friend Request", I clicked the link, and to my surprise, there was a picture of my mother! I thought there must be a mistake or this is a joke. But I followed the image to her profile, her name just as her friends call her... hm. Something is terribly wrong! I'm not saying Myspace is just for teens, but why is my mom online when she is at work!? I suppose it is the same reason why my friends are online on their phones even though they are at school. When does being online turn into an addiction, instead of a way to pass time?
Myspace is a great way to keep in touch with friends, relatives and co-workers, but at some point you cross a line. I prefer not to see images of my friends semi-topless, or even worse, images of my aunt semi-topless..... I've seen and heard of several cases where an employee is fired because of the content on their Myspace profile. Is this ok? When do we cross that line? If you looked at my profile, you would see a picture of my boyfriend and I, a picture of the Eiffel tower and a few comments from friends . I do not put something on there that I wouldn't want my mother to see. Why? Because if I can't show it to my own mother, I must be embarrassed!
Most recently, there was a young girl severely beat up by "friends" and it was recorded on video. The kids who committed this act of hate upon her said that she was talking trash about them on her Myspace page. They also intended on uploading the footage to Myspace Videos. There are also reports of people being harassed, stalked and their identity stolen due to information they posted on their profile.
I totally enjoy the social aspect of Myspace, but when everyone is always on it, or is so obsessed with it, it may become somewhat of a hazard. When my mom is on Myspace as oppose to working, or when a friend pays $7.99/month to have Myspace Mobile, something is seriously wrong. People are addicted to it, can't get enough of it and expose to much of themselves in their pictures! There is nothing wrong with socializing online, until you get addicted to it! So from now on, I' m setting limitations for any online activity, even checking my email. You may think you're just checking to see if you received anything, but when you're checking in 10-15 times a day...tone it down a little!

I agree... myspace is way overrated and people are crazy addicted to it. It can be dangerous depending on what you post on your profile, especially inregards to jobs. All a boss has to do is google your name and *poof!* up pops your myspace page. To protect your privacy, be sure to set your privacy settings to private. That way, nobody who is not your friend can see your information.

About your mom, it's troubling if she's spending tons of time on the site, but perhaps she just wants to be able to network the same as anyone else. There's not really anything wrong with that. My mom has facebook (facebook is way better than sucky myspace), but only so she can easily keep in-touch with her 5 kids who live in three different countries. We were all happy that she joined so we can share pictures and stuff very easily.

Overall, I think myspace is crap. It's full of bugs, hackers, and stalkers. Not cool.

My mom made a myspace because my brother is in Iraq and she wants to keep up with him! I didn't intend on making my mom look like a Myspace psycho!

thnx

haha well that's good to hear she's not a psycho.
That's a great thing about sites like that... is the ability to keep in-touch with loved ones from far away.

I'm sure my mom could relate to your mom.

What's really weird is when your friend's moms have myspace and they start trying to talk to you.

I can definitely see how you'd be a little weirded out by your mom on myspace! To be honest, my younger (17) sister isn't even on my friends' list! I see her at home all the time, no reason for her to want to stay in contact lol.

Times flies like the wind; fruit flies like a banana.

People are now using the internet as their ONLY means of socializing. which in my opinion isnt healthy!
