Correct me if I'm Politically Incorrect!!

We're growing up in a politically correct world. What's wrong with
it? most people would say nothing, but I really don't like it at all.
I mean it's all about hurting people's feelings really. We do that
anyway, whether we call someone black or african american anyway.
Look, I hate hurting people's feelings. But I don't think that being
politically correct about it does any good. I mean when I can't even
call someone black in school, or mentally retarded, it's pretty lame.
I don't mean anything by it, it's just the way language is used. It's
a way to describe somebody. Sure it's good to use caution when
talking to and about people. If it's inappropiate, than I'm totally
fine with the "politically correct" term. I just don't like the label
"politically correct" because then it makes things offical. You get
looked down upon, or yelled at for calling someone asian, instead of
specifying what kind of asian.

I just think it's stupid. Especially because when we call people
black or asian, they don't mind. Hell no they don't mind. They'll
tell you that. They call themselves that for gods sake! I think the
people that we really offend when we don't speak politically
correctly is the people who made this whole thing up.

So I call a black person a black person. The black person doesn't
mind; in fact he's proud of it. The white person is the one who
actually minds. There's irony for you.

Another thing is this whole politically correct thing has gotten our
society so soft. It affects anything. It's come to the point that
even if we capture a well known terrorist and take him into custody,
he won't get the death sentence. All I'm saying is that our view
about issues like the death sentence have greatly softened over the
past few decades. And I think being politically correct changed this.
People are araid of being too harsh, so then they become too soft. I
mean being nice to a terrorist seems thoughtful and loving, but it
wasn't the idea people had 50 years ago about how to treat
terrorists. Why has this changed? Just because it sounds good though,
doesn't make it right. I don't think that our way of thinking is any
better than it was decades ago. But this is how we humans operate. We
believe what we think.

I like being nice, but not under the "rules" of political correctness!

I have a black roommate. She doesn't like to be called African-American because she isn't African, she is American and black. Though it really does differ from person to person.

Another issue with this, and a subject I find ironic is calling people Asians. Asia is a continent. So Russians are Asians.. and so are Indians... but we just call Koreans, Chinese, Japapnese, etc Asian because we can't tell the difference. Id that politically correct? It is really hard to say these days.

A side from my comments,I like your blog because it really gets you thinking about the subject. I like it!

I agree that the whole idea of being PC has gone overboard, but I don't see the connection to the death penalty. Anything can be said in hate, regardless of the words used.

Oh, that's a good point! I'm going to remember that one.

I actually heard someone use "African American" as a slur, only by the way he said it. It was weird, but it made me realize that a lot depends on tone of voice and if there is hate in your heart, it comes out in your voice.

Also my whole dads side of the family is "Native American" (Not 1/1000000th but like they lived on the Navajo reservation) and they all hate it when people call them "Native American" Because my whole family is so unPC at our small business we tell people Marry Christmas during the christmas season and if they have a problem they don't come back and all the people who don't care keep coming....either that or they really like baked goods :P

I know some indigenous people that get pissed with the word Indian, and some that think, "hell, the white man named us, we're Indians." I just don't tend to point out ethnicity. I really don't think it's relevant in a conversation or friendship.

I'm a non-believer, so I usually just say Happy Eastah. (very unPC inside joke with my mom, but it seems to throw people off, so I keep it.)

I don't see how the death penalty thing comes into play. I doubt political correctness has anything to do with it. I'm against the death penalty because I think murder, of anyone, is immoral, not because I'm afraid of being mean to someone.
