Gun Possession

I understand that the "right to bear arms" is a right of all Americans.  However, I think that many people take that right for granted.  I know that people kill people, not guns.  But if the criminally insane people in this world didn't have access to firearms, then maybe some of the murders in America wouldn't happen in the first place.  I think that the constitution needs to be altered to take into consideration our present state in America, and make firearms more difficult to own.

When Lionel Tate was twelve years old, he was convicted of beating to death a six year old girl.  This conviction was later overturned because the appeals court wasn't sure if Tate understood the charges. He pleaded guilty to 2nd degree murder and was put on probation for ten years.  In May 2005, Tate robbed a pizza delivery man at gunpoint.  He has been sentenced to thirty years for violating his probation by owning a gun.  His mother, a state trooper, has told Tate that he could win an appeal for this recent conviction and be out of jail in a year.

Now, there are alot of things wrong with this case.  I think that the boy should have never had the conviction overturned because he committed another violent crime a few years after the appeal.  However, I think it was a good move for him to get thirty years for possession of a firearm.  This man is dangerous, and shouldn't be able to own a gun because of his previous conviction!  We in America give guns to anyone who can pay for them, and that's just not ok!

Who gets to decide who can and cannot own a gun. It's scary to me when the government can decide who can and cannot have means to defend their freedom if necessary.

Its also really scary to know that if someone does not control gun distribution that 1,000s more lives will be lost to stupid people.
Besides unless your going hunting you really have no use for a gun.

That isn't true. My family owns multiple guns and yet we aren't a family of hunters. Some people like going target practicing, whether it is at the range or out in the middle of nowhere. We aren't killing animals. Another reason people own a gun is it is something that they enjoy collecting.

This is one of the worst arguments I've ever heard.

Unless you have 8 feet, you really have no use for 4 pairs of shoes. Does that somehow make your right to own 4 pairs of shoes disappear? Absolutely not.

I don't think that in America we need guns to protect ourselves, that's what the police are for. It's not like there are men walking down the street shooting innocent people like there are in foreign countries. And there's no reason to go hunting either, seeing as we don't have to kill our dinner to survive. If there were no guns around to shoot people with, there would be less deaths.

I am a police officer. Please go to your local police department and do a "ride along". No offense intended but you need to experience the real world. The police cannot and in fact seldom do "protect people" from a crime occurring. We usually get to the scene of a crime after it has already occurred. Also, legally it is a little known fact but the U.S. Supreme Court, that's right the highest court in the land has ruled that police departments have no legal obbligation to protect citizens from crime. Don't believe me? Look it up. Most people have no idea of what goes on crime wise in their communities. Read the section of the newspaper entitled police blotter. I as a police officer welcome and encourage Law Abbiding Citizens to get proper training and background checks and take responsibility for there safety, because you can't always, in fact quite seldomly can depend on others.

Turn on your TV and watch the news. Innocent people are being shot daily nationwide in robberies, drive-by-shootings, and on college campuses.

There's about a billion other ways to kill someone besides a gun- knives, slingshots, cigarettes, etc.

People can get guns and bullets way too easily. I mean, you can walk into your local Walmart and buy as many bullets as you want. The Columbine shooters bought over 900 rounds of ammo at a local store (KMart I think). There should be limits on how many bullets you can buy at one time. Also, I think bullets should be more expensive. Yes, it would be a detriment to hunters, but most hunters (at least where I live) only hunt for fun really. They eat what they kill, but it's not like they need to do that to survive. And I'd rather have the hunters a little upset than so many people being killed by guns everyday.

We only have the right to bear HUNTING WEAPONS, nothing else. Blame the states for allowing other types of guns
