I am sitting here studying for my Spanish test, a monster of a test covering everything we have learned ever. Of course, after having studied for a few hours, my brain is starting to wander. Studying spanish really made me think about immigration, especially Mexican immigration to the US. I have heard about it for as long as I can remember, but I still don't see what's wrong with it. People in Mexico and Cuba and other Central American areas are worse off than we are, and yet we still won't help them. I know America does a lot for other countries, but why not help our closest neighbors?
I think immigration, from Mexico especially, should be allowed. We share a border with Mexico, and if Mexican people can get a job here, in the US and not in Mexico, than they should be able to get that job in the US. I know that it is taking away jobs from Americans, but I strongly believe in giving others an opportunity to get out of Mexico and into America in order to gain freedom and hope.
I know I must sound totally ignorant about this issue. I know some of the problems with letting Central Americans into the US, but American is one of the (even the) wealthiest country in the world, and if anyone can help our less fortunate neighbors, it's the United States.

I live in Texas I have to deal with illegals everyday. When I go to school I have to get past them to get to school. Some do want to come here to work, but most jsut want a quick fix to a big problem. They come over here get Medicare, take our jobs, stress the tax base of the community,by enrolling their kids in the school illegaly. Some come over here jsut to commit crimes that they know that they can't be held on or charged with because they are not citizens. I know right here in my hometown a guy was killed in the middle of a night club, by a illegal alien. The police arrested him and then found out that he was a illegal they were forced to cut him lose they couldn't hold him. Right know he is back on the streets and just a month ago he was picked-up for raping a 5 year old girl. The police were forced to let him go even though it was a police officer who walked in on him in the act! I think that if Mexicans want to come over here there is a legal way to do it. THey should do it that way or not at all.
I hesitate to use the tired "You don't know what it's like for meeeee" thing, as it can often undermine an argument, but illegal immigration really is an issue that many people in other parts of the country don't see like those of us who live so close to the border. Enter360 has it right on. Many immigrants do come over for a better life, and I can sympathize with them. However, there are many, many others that come over to commit crimes (drug smuggling is a huge problem on that front), and who abuse government programs and other such things.
There's no objection by most (sane?) Americans to people immigrating legally from Mexico and Central America, but illegal immigration is a different matter entirely. It's not that Americans (or the majority of us) don't want to help others. Of course we do. However, just letting people come and go as they please is going to hurt us more than it will help them. A day worker program seems like an excellent idea to me, but I'm afraid I don't know quite as much about that particular topic as I should.
