Do You Love Me

She seems as grown up as a teenager, yet she's only three. Her mother doens't care and forgot her at school by herself. She felt left go and forgotten like the last penny in the bank. Her mother doesn't understand her and all her brothers are all grown up. She lives each day not knowing if her mother really cares or even knows she's there. She thinks she needs to prove herself as an athlete in a race. She wonders when someone will notice her and ler her know they love her. Every night she sits in bed waiting for her mother to come and tuck her in. She never comes and she cries herself to sleep wondering why no one understands how she feels. She knows she's young, but doesn't care, cause she needs to take care of herself. She hopes someone will notice and tell her she's the best. She feels like a lonely duck in the pond that is frozen in ice. She's driving with her mother ont he way to school the next day. She tells her mom she loves her and her mother doesn't know what to day, so she doesnt' say a thing, and the little girl cries.

My mom was a pre-school teacher and every once and a while she would have a student in her classes that you could tell was different than the rest of the kids. They acted more grown up, were more shy and didn't always interact well with the other kids. I wrote the poem above about one of her students.

It breaks my heart that parents find it so hard to tell their kids that they love them and give them a hug once in a while. Parents tell your kids you love them. Take care of them, be a parent, so they can focus on being a kid. Love them, it's not that hard. All you have to do is give in to those adorable little faces and let them touch your life. They grow on you.

Psychologists talk about boosting self-esteem but how about showing you love them and that they don't have to try in vain to get that love from you or worse from someone else. That's the real problem today. Parents just need to be parents.
