So perhaps it's a little tin-foil-hatty of me, but this is troubling.
On page 344, Woodward describes the doings at the White House in the early morning hours of Wednesday, the day after the '04 election.
Apparently, Kerry had decided not to concede. There were 250,000 outstanding ballots in Ohio.
In fact, he considers going to Ohio to camp out with his voters until there is a recount. This is the last thing the White House needs, especially after Florida 2000.
So what happened?
James Carville gets on the phone with his wife, Mary Matalin, who is at the White House with Bush.
"Carville told her he had some inside news. The Kerry campaign was going to challenge the provisional ballots in Ohio -- perhaps up to 250,000 of them. 'I don't agree with it, Carville said. I'm just telling you that's what they're talking about.'
"Matalin went to Cheney to report...You better tell the President Cheney told her."
Matalin does, advising Bush that "somebody in authority needed to get in touch with J. Kenneth Blackwell, the Republican Secretary of State in Ohio who would be in charge of any challenge to the provisional votes." An SOS goes out to Blackwell. "
At minimum, he blocked the recounts, as was his power. At maximum(speculation) that any sources who could help Kerry were hushed up sufficienctly so that Kerry couldn't find any whistleblowers to come out about the fraud.
So tin-foil-hatty, but LOGICAL. I'm in a sci-fi-suspense mood today. But onwards!
And am I the only one who feels betrayed by Bob Woodward? He was the ULTIMATE ethical journalist hero-I read All the Presidents Men and was RIVETED by what the Washington Post went through to expose Nixon... And now? He's the ultimate corrupt secretive "in the club" journalist who won't expose these liars because it would endanger his privilege! Remember how HE TOO was in on the Plamegate leak, but didn't come out and join Fitzgeralds investigation? He's an accomplice in this, just the same as anyone in the cabinet, and I'm ashamed to have once admired him. Oh well, I suppose we'll all succumb to the establishment someday...
But who REALLY was hurt by this? Who really was hurt by Kerry's loss?
I'll tell you who!
Soldiers who have DIED since 2004.
Katrina Victims who were failed by their government.
People who've lost their jobs and livelihoods because of this recession.
The people of other nations who have been alienated by our foreign policy.
Those who have been scammed by Medicare Reform.
Those who pay taxes to feed Bush's swollen and mis-prioritized budget.
Those workers who trusted our government to ensure their safety in the mines, who died because we would barely slap the hands of money-hungry companies.
Those people who CARE about the environment.
People who care about their rights as Americans, to privacy, to fair trial, to NOT BE TORTURED.
Oh my how low Bush has dragged us... because of a tip off, a lie, a faulty swarm of voting machines, and a media monopoly.

interesting link on the election...
Perhaps Carville was thinking about the Clinton's improved chance to be in the white house in 08 if Kerry lost.

The idea that Carville was disloyal to JK and the Democratic party is ridiculous. There is abolutely nothing in his being that would want George Bush to spend 1 more misreable day than necessary at 1600 Pennsylvania. He is the smartest progressive campaign manager in this generation and knows exactly what a Republican administraion means.JK and John Edwards said there was no rush to concede, but recognized that overturning 180,000 votes by recount was not the same as 550 votes in Florida. JK had a team of lawyers who carefully examined their chances of success and wisely decided that both he JE would appear as whiners and sore loosers to challenge a 180,000 vote deficiency. Just spent 3 weeks working with the Cleveland Cayahoga Bd. of Elections and Strickland/Brown campaign and I can assure your bloggers that they are hiring 7500 new election judges and technicians to make sure that 2006 is not a repeat of 2004. JK and JE will be announcing early in '07 that they are once again running for President, which would not be happening had they unwisely decided to contest the Ohio 2004 results. All of these folks JK,JE and james Carvell are bright loyal Democrats who would be astounded to hear of such a conspiracy theory. Let's leave it up to Republicans to eat their young.

he's married to Mary Matalin-a VERY right wing writer.. He must have known she WOULD have tipped them off, and that they had connections.
Also, just because he's a democrat doesn't mean that he automatically supports Kerry. Check out any democratic forum, and you'll see a lot of people who(for a reason I cant see) wonder HOW kerry got teh nomination, and genuinely don't like him or his policies.
And while the number are different.. challanging those ballots might have led to people coming forward...
I dont like the idea of one of our own "betraying" the party, but it definately makes sense with what i know...
And either way, I still can't see HOW ON EARTH he ended up with Mary Matalin!
Wait, correct me if I'm mistaken, but is this James Carville the same James Carville regarded as the ultra-democratic "ragin' cajun"? I'm a bit confused.
I believe you're right... He's also married to Mary Matalin-one of the most hateful Republican writers... As nasty as Anne Coulter! Google her... scary stuff... eludes me how they sit down at the dinner table together without arguing politics...
Wow. Two extremists from opposite sides of the political spectrum joined in holy matrimony and STILL together. I just don't get it....
The thought kind of chills the blood.. I don't know if i could be in the same room as her!
But i can see them discussing politics(with heavy mediation) but i just don't see WHY he would have told her about kerry's plans...
