Back to Basics: Jazz & Big Band Breaking Out

I'm listening to Christina Aguilera's lastest cd Back to Basics. I am not a huge fan of pop, but I believe that this CD is a step in the right direction of music. She does put a modern flare to jazz and old school tunes... but in her second disc, she brings back the true vibes of the classic singers from the 20s and 30s. My heart has always danced to the better tunes of Billie Holiday, Sinatra, Franklin, Louis Armstrong, Fltercher Henderson, and so many more. Swing dancing has always been a love of mine.

Personally, I feel that we have needed, for a while, better music. The 90s was perhaps the worst decade in music history. Michael Buble is another musician I feel is keeping this style alive; though I think he should bust out with his own rhymes instead of covers. He's got the voice but needs the original music now ;).

Sophie Millman, Russian beauty and upcoming artist, is one I know I really hope continues her career.

Is there anyone else out there who is jazzy, old school like this?

I absolutely agree. First of all because I love swing. I used to be on a competitive swing dancing team. Now I'm a ballroomie, but I still have a soft spot for it. Secondly because I love Christina. Her last albumn stripped is also a great example of her soulful ballads. Walk Away on that record is amazing. Thirdly, although I love pop and alternative rock and much of this generations music, I think we have lost touch in a certain sense with the soul of music and current artists like here remind us that there is more to life than busy on the go music.

:-D I need to hear her Stripped album. I only heard 'Dirty'.

I always wanted to learn how to dance... take lessons for swing. How did you get into it?

I had a friend invite me and she heard form a friend etc . . . but in general just get online and see whats cheap in your area. I started out the cheap way, and then as I got better started going to the advanced more expensive lessons.
