Iran Leader Says US Abusing UN Power
It makes sense that a country that has the resources for nuclear weapons should be able to research how they want. It is, after all, in the natural rights philosophy that a person or an entity works for self-interest, and the United States is based on the beliefs held in the natural rights philosophy. Who are we to interrupt others', for now let's say, "quest for knowledge?" Why should other countries not have the same scientific opportunities that the United States has had? Besides, aren't our research labs researching materials and weapons that have the potential to obliterate huge areas of land? What gives us the right to do as we please and not let other countries do the same if they have the resources and talent to do so? Aren't we just as much a threat as anyone else, if not greater so?
As long as the country in question is not a direct threat to any other nation, there shouldn't be any problem. In Iran's case, there might just be a threat. I don't know enough about the situtation yet to make a judgement. This was just a general statement. Quite honestly, I do not think that I support any country's research in nuclear weapons. There should be no need for it, ideally. More generally, a country should have a right to research whatever it wants, as long as it does not become an imminent and direct threat to its own or another country's people.
This post has a lot of rhetorical questions. Anyways, I probably shouldn't be reading so much into it, but the thought just came into my mind.
*Note: Originally written on September 19, 2006. Ideally, though, I feel that non-proliferation is the best tactic. What do we want nuclear weapons for? To destroy killer asteroids?
