if your a sex offender say no to myspace

The New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is trying to pass the first law banning sex offenders from sites such as myspace and facebook and other pornographic sites. This law would require all level three sex offenders and those whos victims were under 18 to list all of their email addresses and screen names to the state. These sites are also agreeing to help keep these people off of their sites although it is not apart of the law. This law would also give parole officers the right to check sex offenders computers without notice.

I personally find this to be a great idea. Some would say its an against their rights to privacy but i think if they are out offending children, or commiting level three acts then i don't really care because they didn't care about the child or person they raped. These offenders are not the guy flashing someone in a public place, these are people that have raped, and molested on a number of accounts.

Of course no plan is perfect, its very easy to make up a new email address with a fake name but by making this a law these people could be sent back to jail, and if there is the fear of a parole officer checking in..it may deter them even more.

This is more feel-good legislation that will have no practical effect on anyone's safety.

Here is an intersting article that actually displays some common sense:

But aside from the fact that you're giving the police the power to conduct search/seizure operations absent probable cause (or even any other legal standards for that matter!), sounds like a fantastic idea.

But why not just install cameras in their homes instead?

Once people are found guilty of certain crimes, shouldn't they lose certain rights? Felons can't vote, so why not take privacy away from pedaphiles?

Whether felons can vote depends on the state.

if by no probable cause you mean they didn't force a child to have sex with them then yea i geuss there is no cause. again i will point out that it does have flaws, but its an attempt to discourage people from offending again. but yea i suppose it is important to protect the rights of someone who doesn't give a shit about someone elses.

camera...what a great idea, i'll bring that up next time im trying to have an ethical disussion thanks.

Please tell that to Genarlow Wilson. Your little feel good law has a ton of exceptional cases that you're unwilling to consider.

But hey, it's just the scum of society, so who cares about little things like their civil liberties. Personally, I think that we should lock people up for life regardless of their crime. Agree or disagree?

Myspace and other PORNOGRAPHIC sites? um, what?

Also, it's ridiculous. A "sex offender" can be someone who at age 15 had sex with his 14-year-old girlfriend. Yeah, let's keep him from Myspace, wtf? If someone is a danger to society, they should be in jail. Otherwise, let them go on Myspace.

It's also pretty impossible to track it, anyway.

ok again can i point out that these are not the guy who flashes a football game and a kid haveing sex with his girlfriend isn't either...also their ages being 14 and 15 most states would not consider that statutory rape. these are people that have straight out raped and most cases that this would regard would be when it was the rape or molestation of a child...under the age of 18 because in the state of New York 18 is the age of consent excluding when it involves a minor and another person up to two years older. so again i am not talking about a 17 year old with a 19 year old either. i am talking about a 45 year old sleeping with an 11 year old.

and if we are so concerned with criminals having their rights, lets give them the right to vote again, or the right to bear arms, or lets take them off national registy lists and allow them to apply to a job without listing their criminal behavior. why now are we concerned with respecting their individual rights?

Kiota's picture

Why not? Criminals are people too.

If someone commits a crime like rape and he is a danger to society, he should be in jail, period. Releasing him and putting him on a ridiculous "registry" is stupid. If he's a danger, he should be in jail. If not, he should be free.
