"A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic."
-Joseph Stalin
I was a bit shocked to find out that my favorite quote was said by Stalin. Its not like it has means something to me personally, but more because it really makes you think.
A single death is a tragedy... I cant imagine losing my fiance, I would be broken up by his death, but I can talk about a genocide (Such as the holocaust) without so much as a tear. 6 million people were killed. Its just a number right? Thats 6 million families that were torn apart. 6 million....
I used to watch the movie Pearl Harbor and laugh when my friends cried, but the last time I watched it, I had to walk out. It bothered me to see my little brother cheer when a Japanese plane went down (even more so when he called them 'stupid japs') Those are husbands, brothers, uncles, cousins, no matter what nationality, those are people with things to live for. You cant look at a country and see only evil, because for every one evil person in this world there is a good person as well.

Thats 6 million families that were torn apart.
Actually, it's a lot less families than it is people, since whole families were killed. Just saying. It is horrible, that we care about one story so much, but when so much of it happens, our hearts harden, in a sense. Or it seems unreal. I mean, 6 million is a really big number. Can we really imagine that many people?

Especially if the death is a middle class, pretty blonde girl. Watch the news...how long did they cover the Natalie Holloway case? The Laci Peterson case? Darfur...?
Hail The PitGodess!
That's a good point. I didn't even know what was going on in Darfur until a few months ago.

Funny how Stalin says such things and he’s a contributor to more ‘statistics’ than Hitler. Purgings, assassinations, the Gulag; he’s one to seem high and mighty about killing people for no apparent reason.

Death hurts beyond comprehension whether one or millions.
That is why war is so bad!
