I come from a middle class family. We are not poor, and by no means wealthy. Recently, I have been offered two opportunities to travel for educational purposes. One, to Costa Rica to take advanced Spanish classes, and the other, to San Fransisco to the National Youth Leadership Forum On Medicine. The cost for both of these is over 2,000 dollars. Now, upon receiving the information on the Costa Rica trip, I realized I would need sponsors and or scholarships in order to go. So I started my search...The program only offered scholarships for low income families, and the wealthy families did not need to worry about the money, they had some to spare. The deadline for Costa Rica came and passed. Sure, I was disappointed that I was not able to go, but I just knew I could get sponsors for the NYLFM. As it turns out, businesses in my area, even doctor's offices, are more likely to give donations and sponsors to the sports players out there. My parents are deeply concerned that I will not be able to go in the summer. Even being nominated for this is a great honor. I would learn so much, and going would greatly improve my chances of getting into college. So I ask...why is it that the wealthy..(who don't need to worry about these things), and the low income families(who are offered many scholarships through this program) are taken care of? What about all of those students out there who are stuck in the middle? There are tons I am sure of it. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and understand the need to help in the low income families, and I am sure the wealthy have worked hard for their money. What I don't understand is why a 4.0 student 1 out of 471 in her class, cannot seem to get a sponsor or scholarship to attend an out of state highly educational seminar.

Excellent blog. I'm finding out that there are many excellent opportunities online. People want to know what your project is, what you hope to accomplish, and how much money you need. I assume you're probably signed up with that Fastweb gig, but there are many opportunities out there. QuantumShiftTv, i think another is called the "Do Something" scholarship, and another was called Conscious Lifestyle. All excellent programs.
It is a shame how the middle class is shrinking. If you're really interested on the subject, I'd suggest reading Thom Hartmann's novel, I think he wrote it last year, THE UNDECLARED WAR ON THE MIDDLE CLASS--AND WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT.
