Treatment of Sex Offenders: Part II

Tagged:  •    •

This is in response to a blog I wrote earlier titled Treatment of Sex Offenders. It would be useful if you read that one before you read this one… http://www.progressiveu.org/222044-treatment-of-sex-offenders

After I wrote this I got a lot of feedback from people agreeing with the green license plates, disagreeing with license plates, debating what constituted a real sex offender, and whether we should have a different color license plate for every crime.

First thing we had so many people say that it was unfair because being labeled a sex offender could be misleading. Some people get labeled as a sex offender for urinating in public (it happens but not often), or for having possession of child pornography. Personally to me people who urinate in public should not be labeled a sex offender. I also do not think that a 17 year old that has sex with a 15 year old should be considered a sex offender.  On the other hand a person who has possession of child pornography should be labeled a sex offender.

Second the green license plates have some practicality to it. I stick by one of my examples on the last blog. The most important thing this law could do would allow parents to see if a sex offender is near. If I were a parent I would want to be able to make sure my child was safe.

Although I do agree with it being an invasion of privacy, I feel that if you commit the crime you have given up your right to privacy. My dad always says, I trust you until you give me reason not too, and being a sex offender gives people a reason not to trust them anymore.

I also have a question. Would it be entirely out of line to make a murder have a red license plate, a sex offender a green one, a drunken driver a blue one, and so on? Couldn’t it help society be aware of who they are around?

In my last blog it was pointed out that the license plate was a bad idea for a first time sex offenders and I disagree. I think that if the license plate law were to be passed that it should apply to first time offenders. Now if the law were expanded to cover more crimes I think more minor crimes such as drunk driving should be on a repeat offender basis.

You can disagree or agree, but this is my view of sex offenders.
