Legalize Cat Hunting

2005 March 7

This story was a while back but it was pretty interesting proposal made by this guy to prevent wild bird deaths.

In Madison, Wisconsin, Hunter Mark Smith, a firefighter fromm La Crosse, proposed that hunters make domestic cats fair game and could be shot by anyone with a small-game license.

Smith thinks this proposal is a way to stop cats from killing wild birds. I can imagine that cat owners throughout the country are angered by this.

A wildlife ecology professor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison conducted a 4 year study that analyzed stomach contents of over 100 cats. His results estimated that between 7.8 million and 219 million birds are killed by cats in Wisconsin every year!

Of course there are a lot of oppositions to his proposal. Cat lover groups and humane groups are saying it is a ridiculous idea and that there are other ways to solve the problem of cats preying on wild birds.
