Texas Southern University is an accredited historically black university. Founded in 1947, this university has made a major impact on the lives of the students that have attended since its opening. Since I am an out-of-state student, I didn’t hear all the bad press about the school. All I knew was that I wanted to be a lawyer and Thurgood Marshall School of Law was one of the top. My father stays in Houston and I told him I was going to Texas southern University and he had a fit. Immediately he wanted me to transfer to University of Houston. Needless to say I am at Texas Southern University.
At first, I didn’t like it. In fact, I couldn’t stand it. I went to a black high school and had no intentions on going to an HBCU. The setting made me feel like I was still in high school which made me rethink my decision of coming here. Originally I’m from Philadelphia; therefore the campus seemed too small. Texas Southern University is supposedly one of the biggest HBCU’s. All the campuses in Philadelphia seem more spaced out, and not all cluttered around one walkway. I think that because I ‘m used to seeing something a certain way I was upset when it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be.
As I continue my time here at Texas Southern University I am extremely ecstatic that I came here. For one, I met the roommate that saved my life. As of today I have completely turned my life around. I am a Christian and everything I do I try to represent Christ. I no longer drink, party, or any of the profound things I did while I was on my way to hell. I met one of my biggest challenges which was giving up secular music. Leaving the worldly things behind has made me more organized and focused. I never would’ve found somebody like my roommate if I did not come to Texas Southern University. Coming here has changed my life for the better.
With all the negative press, Texas Southern University has done something good for every student that has been apart of it. Whether that be an education, friendships, or a life changing experience like the one I had. Even though it may seem like this is a feeder school and only the leftovers come here, you can get a lot out of attending this university. I know I did.
Texas Southern is the school 4 me

Did this roommate save your life literally or in the Christian way of the term? Just curious.
