As all of us bloggers here at progressive U know, blogging can be a tool for "progress". While I'm no expert, whichever way you define progress, blogging keeps ideas flowing through our keyboards to just about anyone. It forces us to think through issues (not just think about) to form opinions of our own. Just like milk, it helps us grow!
Collaborating ideas and progress aside, blogging improves our writing skills. Thats definitely one of my goals through blogging. We all know (i hope) that regular reading and writing improves writing skills (practice makes perfect right?). So maybe no one reads your blogs, and you don't win the blogging scholarship contest, but hey - you're probably still benefiting from all the writing!
Writing and reading is an endless cycle if you think about it. We read articles, books, blogs, cereal boxes, etc which then influences our own vocabulary and writing style.
Since blogging is practice, and practice can improve our writing, and our improved writing can influence another reader, then blogging can improve writing everywhere!

Well thats my splurge on writing. I'm well aware that I too need practice (and lots of it), which was actually part of my motivation for writing this.
