The national average of gas prices this morning was 2.93 a gallon. In my home town of Los Angeles, 2.93 was a bargain, if you could find it. But what is happening this time around. Their are no hurricanes, the refineries are working, and the companies recieved a 2 billion dollar tax cut from the government. To add to that, the quarterly profits of all the companies in the last three months of 2005 was 33 billion dollars, With Exxon Mobile recieving over 10 billion dollars of that profit. To put that into perspective, we can compare that to Wal Mart, the richest retailer in the world. In 2005, Wal-Mart sold 312 billion dollars with of goods with a 12 billion dollar profit. Exxon Mobile got Wal-Marts yearly profit in a little over 3 months.
The oil companies realize their dilemma. The day of easy oil is over, and the demand for oil is going up. With China nand India entering the global economy, the oil supply needs to be stretched. The oil companies know they wont last for ever, and want to wring our wallets dry while they still can. In order to combat this, we, as a society, need to boycott Exxon Mobile. We can still buy oil from other companies, like conoco philips or British Petroleum. By nearly forcing the largest oil company out of business, they will be forced to lower their prices in order to compete. The trend will then leak to the other companies that need to compete with exxons lower prices. We can make the gas companies capitalist again, and force them to drive down prices. IF exxon startes to raise the price of gas, we start to boycott them again. This is neccessary untill we can develope alternate fuel sources like hydrogen cell technology or ethanol based oil.
